Cute, Sexy, Pretty are the three words usually used to describe K-Pop girl idols in the past. However, there has been a new wave swallowing the K-Pop scene since the debut of Mamamoo. They just cannot be simply explained by those words. What is the word to explain crazy weird lyrics well melted by strong vocals and powerful performance? What is the word to explain four distinctive characteristics all shinning stunningly, yet creating a great collaboration?
I cannot find such words in a dictionary. Guess only the word “MAMAMOO” can represent such idea.
Mamamoo’s “Purple” Comeback Show Case
Brought to you by your friends at Kpopmap.
1.Purple is a Funny Color
The showcase started off with the ice breaker, a fourth track of the album, AZE GAG. Though showcases were mostly about showing what their songs are, Mamamoo’s showcase seemed to be what they are having fun about. Solar and WheeIn started their performance under the stage which was definitely eye catching. As they reunited with rest of the members, the show really started.
The stage wasn’t all about performance, nor about vocal, nor about being funny. It was just ALL of it. As of performance, the killing part, picked by Solar, is where they lined up like a Dominos and rubbed their heads like they had headaches. Despite the humorous lyrics, the song didn’t seem like a joke because of the great powerful vocal. Having a fun and a funny stage, well, we know too well about this already. Their facial expressions tell everything about how fun they were having fun.
2. Pink + Blue = Purple
After the stage, they sat down to talk about their 5th mini album. WheeIn, defined their album as “best of both worlds”. “Purple is a mixture of pink and blue. Pink is the bright color, while blue is the deep color. We wanted to express both of the worlds in our music and performance.” So basically, “Purple” was all about what Mamamoo had. The brightness, as well as the deepness.
When they were asked about the hardships they had as an artist, they said “It’s true that we are all bright and happy. However, we did had some hardships, not so big ones, but enough to be stressful. But we do what we love and that it. We can deliver the feelings of sorrow well because we went through it. We can deliver the feelings of happiness and joyfulness well, because we are. ” As pink and blue all existed in purple, it did in Mamamoo as well.
3. Purple is a Irreplaceable Color
Their Title song, ‘Yes I am’ is a “shout of women of their power and charms in a very adorable yet powerful way.” said Solar. The lyrics was all about Mamamoo themselves. Moon Byul, especially describe what her charms were very directly in her lyrics. “I have a controllable nose muscle” she said. “I am rich of the rich when it comes to facial muscle!”
Also, other members discussed about what attractive parts they have but could not be used as lyrics. Solar seemed to be proud of her head bone structure. She said that her shape of the face, as well as her head is very round. “If I become bald, I’ll be a great bald!” WheeIn talked about her deep dimples and HwaSa was proud of her thighs.
As the group was talking about their own charms, they were the purple, the irreplaceable color.
4. Purple is a Colorful Color
Mamamoo talked about “Change” and “Diversity”. In the talk of AZE GAG, WheeIn said, “Actually, the song was sort of a challenge. It’s a whole new type of song where the jokes are melted in the lyrics. We’ve got advice from the fans about the gags. ” Other than ‘AZE GAG’, ‘Yes I am’ as well as other tracks were all something new. Retro was sort of an image the group delivered. However, the album was not on that path. “We’d like to show you diverse stages and diverse music. It’s our goal to be an artist who is capable of music in all genres”.
Until Mamamoo feels satisfaction of their music and the diversity they pursue, let’s cheer for them with full heart!
