LiveWorks Company’s boy group, 1TEAM made its comeback in 9 months with the new digital single, ‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’.

The group is known for its Fairy Pitta-like music as they continuously change themselves into different concepts that go along with the diverse genre of music. (Yes, both ‘Make This’ and ‘VIBE’ are performed by the same artist)

This time, 1TEAM came back with a digital single ‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’, a track that is heavy on distortion sound with rocking beats that many of the fans might have not expected.

To know more about the group and their latest release, Kpopmap met up with 1TEAM on one hot summer day in Seoul and shared some great moments together.

Congratulations on making your comeback! Can you tell the readers what your song, ‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’ is about and what the word means?

‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’(is a Korean word that is used when you’re teasing or making fun of someone) is a song about a close friend who makes fun of his/her friend who just experienced a break-up.

Normally, people would think that friends would comfort someone who just broke-up but a TRUE friend rather teases and makes fun of the situation because they are that close.

I wanted to express that into a song and hoped the listeners would have fun while listening to it.

It’s been 9 months since your last release, can you tell us what you have been up to until this release?

Not just me but all the members focused on self-development, as we prepare for this release. Also, I played games (KARTRIDER) time-to-time hahaha.
JeHyun

We have set-up an at-home gym in our studio and I had focused on training!
JungHoon

We’ve connected with our fans through our content called “Choice” where we cover songs based on fan’s choice! We’ve recently covered, DJ Khaled’s 'No Brainer'.
RuBin

I was inspired by BC hyung’s producing and have been learning music producing in the hopes that one day my song can be selected as one of our songs!
JinWoo

I have been focused on making music all along.

LIVEWORKS

Was there any fun episode while you were shooting the music video for ‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’?

In the teaser, it might’ve given the viewers a very cinematic vibe but in the actual M/V, we played a lot and viewers will notice right away that it’s a fun track!

There is a scene where we are in a cold store and we applied special make-ups for icy effects on our faces but the truth is, the place was over 30 degrees and it was extremely hot!

The special makeup was made out of salt and as time went by, it melted from our body heat which was really salty

We heard that BC composed this song and had been actively involved in creating 1TEAM’s sound in the past as well. Where do you get your inspiration?

Recently, I’ve been listening to a lot of Latin music and had a lot of fun. I was thinking about composing a song based on that particular style but all of a sudden, I was listening to “Loner” by YUNGBLUD and just got hooked right away.

While I was inspired by the song, coincidentally, we received the base track of ‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’ and decided to write a song based on it. That’s how this track came to life.

1TEAM is known for having various concepts with diverse sounds. What did you focus on in order to fit your color into this rock sound?

During recording, I directed everyone with no direction. I wanted them to enjoy as much as they wanted but I only told them to sing as if they were a rockstar.

Which 1TEAM song would you like to recommend to the K-pop fans who just started to know the group?

I think it is hard to decide one particular song since it is hard to define our group’s color. All the past music we have released were the songs that we wanted to try and perform. It may be diverse in the genre but we wanted to –and still want to- constantly show different sides of 1TEAM in every performance.

Is there a genre that you would like to try out in the future?

I’d like to do a hip-hop track that is really heavy on the beats! We’ve done something similar in the past with ‘Make This’ but I want to try something even heavier than that.
JeHyun

Since I’ve been inspired by Latin and moombahton music lately, I would like to write a song based on those sounds.

With the on-going global pandemic, it is hard to travel and meet your fans overseas. Is there any content or an event that you are preparing for your ‘Team One’?

We are preparing for a TikTok challenge with our new release, “ULLAELI KKOLLAELI”! It’s fun and easy to try so we hope that many of you can enjoy it while you do the challenge.

After being a bit over a year since the debut, what kind of artist does 1TEAM want to grow as?

We would like to be an artist that guarantees good music for the listeners. Music that can be added to their playlist as soon as it is released.
JeHyun

When you were trainees, what kept you going besides making your debut? Any tips that you would like to share for the people who live overseas that are dreaming of becoming a K-pop artist?

For me, it was the music itself. Being inspired by the musicians I listen to and imagining that one day, people will enjoy my music was what drove me.
BC

It could be even tougher if you are living overseas but one important thing is that you REALLY need to love what you do and keep pushing yourself!
RuBin

When I was a trainee, I tried not to compare myself with other musicians or other trainees. It seemed meaningless and I focused on developing my own skills and abilities.
JinWoo

For me, I focused on achieving short-term goals one at a time and gradually grow.
JungHoon

I would like to suggest for them to remind themselves why they want to become a K-pop artist whenever they are having doubts. That helped me a lot during my training days.

What’s your goal for this digital single?

The title, ‘ULLAELI KKOLLAELI’ I’m sure is an unfamiliar phrase for international fans and I hope our song becomes a gateway to learning the meaning of the phrase.
JeHyun

I hope that this can be an opportunity to spread a part of our culture to the world and it will be amazing if the phrase is used in other nations as well! Hahaha!
