To begin our breaking K-Pop news and celebrity gossip of this week, we begin with latest news of the hottest K-Pop boy band of 2016 – EXO!
1. SM Entertainment announces EXO’s comeback with repackage album, “LOTTO”.
EXO-Ls rejoice for our EXO Kings will be returning to stage much earlier than expected! SM Entertainment released their plans for a repackage album of the boys’ recently dropped 3rd album, “EX’ACT”. The repackage album’s title will be “LOTTO”, with a new title track of the same name. The album will also feature 3 new songs for the fans to listen to, totaling the albums’ tracks to 13. According to news reports, “LOTTO” will be a rhythmic hip-hop song, which will be a fresh new take to the regular EXO concepts. Their official website has been updated to fit the new concept as the new album will drop on August 18th. EXO will debut their new album on “Music Bank” on August 19.
2. Hallyu sees a drop in Chinese activities due to THAAD disagreements.
Ever since the opposition by China against South Korea’s deployment of THAAD, the hallyu wave has seen a large hit by its Chinese market. Although Korean dramas and K-Pop are greatly enjoyed by the Chinese people, the Chinese government organizations have put out a ban on Korean shows. Not only that, several Korean actors and celebrities had their promotional events cancelled in China. Some actors who were scheduled to play lead roles in Chinese productions have been replaced as well. Yoo InNa was reportedly forced out of a Chinese adaptation of a romantic drama film just a month before its release. Song JoongKi’s endorsement was halted by the Chinese phone company Vivo. EXO’s concert that was scheduled in late August has also been cancelled. With so much discontent going around, we simply hope for a swift end between the bitter disagreements between the two countries.
3. Park YooChun’s sex assault case comes to a close with lady justice turning towards the singers side.
After all the sexual charges against JYJ singer, Park YooChun, were dropped, the idol’s lawyers then sued two accusers and their peers for defamation and blackmail. YooChun had claimed that an accuser, her boyfriend and her cousin (who is said to be affiliated with a gang) used the sexual assault case to blackmail the idol for 500 million KRW (about $500,000 USD). YooChun’s party had countersued them, and the police confirmed that after the woman filed a lawsuit, around 100 milion KRW was exchanged between her and the idol. The woman A was arrested with her boyfriend and cousin on August 4th for the accused crimes, as well as destruction of evidence. It seems Park YooChun’s fate is starting to look positive for the first time in many months.
4. YG’s newest girl group, BLACKPINK, dominates charts with a stellar debut.
YG’s latest girl group, BLACKPINK, had just debuted early this week. Within 4 hours of their album release, the rookie girls had dominated the music charts. The monster rookies had an all-kill record with their debut singles “Whistle” and “BOOMBAYAH” for days since its release. Not only did their debut album, “Square One”, top the charts domestically, but also internationally. With album sales continuing to climb throughout the world, it appears YG Entertainment has another notch on its belt for extraordinary K-Pop groups.
5. Boys 24 opens voting to bring back 5 members after SangMin decides to leave.
This week, Mnet announced that their Unit Sky’s leader Kim SangMin has decided to voluntarily leave the group due to health reasons. Mnet had thanked the program participant for his applaudable work as a leader and an idol, relaying his sorry for having to leave. With SangMin’s best of health and fortunate future in mind, Mnet has opened up a week long voting to find a replacement for his absence. The program announced that they will hold a poll by fans of the last 18 members until the 15th at 0:00 KST. The top 5 members with the highest votes will be brought back into the group to join Boys 24. The winning members will be announced on the 16th and begin promotions on the 22nd.
6. K-Pop welcomes a new K-Pop power couple, Zico and SeolHyun.
AOA’s SeolHyun and BLOCK B’s Zico have confirmed their romantic relationship through their respective labels. Mid-week, Dispatch had released photographic proof of the two idols secretly meeting at Zico’s apartment or car at several different times. The news confirms rumors that had been circulating between the two since January of this year. The official announcement from the labels say the pair had started off as good seniors and juniors, but developed a romantic relationship during March. It’s been said that Zico was the main support in SeolHyun’s life during her scandal for not knowing a specific historical being. The labels ask for the fans’ and the public’s support of the latest K-Pop couple.
