We’re living in an age where toxic comments plague the internet. And the news of Kakao and Daum temporarily disabling comments for the entertainment section appears to be a test drive for combating the issue.

At the moment, the issue of defamation and toxic comments online is even more so serious in South Korea as many netizens believe it was perhaps part of the reason why Sulli decided to tragically end her life.

Kakao and Daum recently made the announcement at a press conference.

CEO Yeo MinSoo expressed regret over the function of leaving comments as it was originally created for the purposes of catering to a healthy and positive public forum where people could build each other up. Instead, it seems that it has contributed to driving someone to death and is partially responsible for some of the social problems that we have today in our society.

In addition, Daum intends to make stricter regulations on comment writers responsible for attacks on an individual’s character.

Stay tuned for updates!

I feel really sorry for those idols who lost their precious lives because of the cruelty of people, who should actually be behind bars for all those malicious and degrading comments. This policy also should have been implemented long before. This has been happening every year in the entertainment industry. No steps were taken before. It’s more heart wrenching when you try do something after it is gone forever…
