Want to learn how to dance rom K-Pop? Here's how!
Kianna, Staff WriterMany K-Pop fans started a dancing journey when they discovered the music genre. Their favorite idols are dance inspirations for them and they want to become dancers just like their favorites. Becoming a dancer is not an easy journey but we’re here to help you start the trip! Here’s some tips and tricks you need to learn how to dance like your favorite idols.
Flexibility and a strong body are one of the most important parts of dancing. K-Pop dances especially can be difficult and draining of your energy. Starting with a good stretching routine and light exercises a few times at the beginning of your journey will go a long way. While you don't need to start off lifting extremely heavy weights and running 4 miles every day, doing some quick jumping jacks, a light jog for a few minutes or some push-ups will help you slowly build your dancing strength. Imagine dancing to SEVENTEEN's 'Super' or SHINee's 'Don't Call Me' without properly conditioning your body!
While you could just jump into K-Pop dances right away, it's a good idea to learn some basic dance fundamentals to see improvements in your skills. K-Pop is a fusion of many different dance styles, it's not just one! House, Vogue, Hip-Hop, Ballet, and many more genres of dance are included in K-Pop dances. Having a good understanding of these dance skills and learning the basics of them will elevate your dancing to a whole other level. Many K-Pop idols started with learning the basics such as BTS's j-hope with break dancing and Rocky with ballet!
There are many easy, starter dances in K-Pop that will have you being a dancing pro in no time. Starting with easy dances will help you to learn basic dance moves and practice on the smaller stuff as well like facials and control. Some easy dances you could learn are BTS’s ‘Go Go’, BLACKPINK’s Jisoo’s ‘Flower’, WINNER’s ‘Really Really’ or (G)I-DLE’s ‘Queencard’. They’re quick to learn and the moves aren’t too complicated for beginners. Once you are able to do easy dances with no problems, you can slowly move up to the more difficult dances for practice!
It might be embarrassing, but recording yourself dancing will help you see where you need to improve and what needs to be fixed. Setting up your camera and running through the dance a few times also helps you to document your progress. Future you will be thankful because they know what to do to get better at dancing rather than repeating the same mistakes.
Many people who are starting their snare journey focus on learning their favorite dances and making them look good. It’s very important to get your moves down and having clean, sharp arms but there’s another important thing to focus on, facials! Facials are crucial to K-Pop dances and dancing in general. You want to make sure you’re keeping the energy and facials up for whatever dance you learn. Watching fancams of your favorite idols will help you will help you get there! Another important thing to do is use a mirror while dancing so you can see your facials as well!
Your favorite idols didn’t wake up and suddenly become the dancers that we know today. It took them time and hard practice to reach their current level and even now they’re still improving! Make sure to give yourself time. If you aren’t perfect from practice number one, just imagine how you will look when you’re on practice number 100!

Looking for friends in the K-Pop community? Here are some tips to make friends in K-Pop Discord server!
Dyllan Mykel, Kpopmap EditorWithin one fandom, there can be various micro-communities across numerous social media outlets. From Twitter to Instagram, there are countless avenues where new fans can make friends.
One platform that has risen in popularity over the years is Discord! The popular communication app allows its users to chat via text and voice, as well as send files which may include fancams or photographs of your favorite idol group.
Now if you're a newcomer to the K-Pop scene and want to make friends, here's how to do so via Discord!
One of the first places you might want to visit in a K-Pop Discord server is the 'Introductions' channel. There, you can briefly provide a brief overview of who you are, your interests, and even your bias in the group. And while not all servers have an 'Introductions' channel, you can always send a short message in the general channel to kick off the conversation.
In order to form any relationship, you need to establish some form of regular conversation. This same concept can be applied to Discord.
Look around the server your in for a text channel that might interest you. Once you do, continue to chime in into various conversations, bonding over your favorite idols and outside interests/hobbies!
While talking to new people might seem scary at first, once you get going, you'll be able to quickly form long lasting friendships.
Once you've started talking with other fans from the same fandom, you'll naturally get comfortable enough to enter a voice call with them.
Entering a voice call can be akin to going from acquaintances to close-knit friends. You can watch various K-Pop content with a group of people and hear their reactions happen in real time.
It adds yet another layer to K-Pop friendship and one more opportunity to gush over your favorite celebrities in a group setting.
While these tips might seem simple in nature, it can be extremely hard to go through with them. But when you do, you'll forge friendships all across the globe.
