On August 1^st, 2019, “D1CE ”(Di-Once) made their debut with first mini-album, "Wake up: Roll the World".

To fully know about D1CE, you might want to know the long journey they took to become the group they are today.

Back in 2017, Happyface Entertainment revealed a boy group project called, Happyface Next Boys(HNB). The project was held for 22 months and after a long period of competition, the group was finally narrowed down to 5 members including Woo JinYoung, Park WooDam, Jung YooJun, Kim HyunSoo , and the leader, Jo YongGeun.

The process of forming a group may have been similar to other idol groups but what the company did differently for this project was that it was constantly updated to the public via VLive.

The group had shown several aspects of becoming an idol to their fans and public, establishing a close relationship with them even before the debut. The group name, “D1CE” itself, is also a result of fan participation as the name was decided through voting (over ten thousand people participated from 108 countries).

And today, the long-held 5-sided dice was rolled as they have officially revealed and performed their debut stage.

As you can tell from their group name, “D1CE, resembles of the object, “Dice” and once it’s rolled, you can never predict which side it will show. Like that, they have announced that they will be showing the unpredictable charms to surprise the audience.

The album, 'Wake up: Roll the World' consists total of 6 tracks and for the showcase, D1CE have prepared two stages for the media including the title song. “Wake Up” and “놀라워(surprised)”.

The first performed stage was “놀라워(Surprised)”, which is the 4^th track from their debut album. The song narrates about a person who is surprised to found oneself how deeply in love he/she is.

The energy they had was really strong and the excitement was also evident as this marks the very first performance as D1CE.

Next performance was their title, “Wake Up”. According to the track description, “Wake Up” is about the start of group’s journey as in “Waking up” and also holds a hidden message of how they will be fully committing for their fans. The track itself is composed with heavy horns sections, mixed with trap beats(full bass!!).

The first part that hooks the listeners is the repetitive 8^th notes melody that carries almost all throughout the verse and with the big drop, comes the powerful chorus. After hearing their song, the biggest impression was the diverse and distinctive tones each vocalist carries. There was the high toned, the neutral, and the heavy husky, all compiled in one group like a choir. It was quite refreshing and well balanced, making it easy to differentiate from one another.

As many of the readers may know, one of the members, Woo JinYoung is famous for previously participating in both “Produce 101 Season 2” and “MIXNINE”. But I’m sure you didn’t know that all the members of D1CE had previously participated in survival programs.

During the Q&A session, one question popped out as it was about how Woo JinYoung felt about the MIXNINE incident. He answered,

“The reason I participated in the show was because, one of my biggest dreams was to debut. When I heard the news about MIXNINE, I was shocked since it was just so unrealistic. It came down hard on me at first and I was hurt but luckily, I was able to keep myself busy and got involved in several projects with the members. All in all, I think MIXNINE became a good experience for me.”

With that, the group wrapped the showcase and D1CE has officially joined the competition. The “Dice” has been tossed and the audience will look closely where the dice will roll.
