Rolling Quartz, a five member, all female Korean rock group, recently kicked off the U.S. leg of its two month-long “STAND UP” U.S. & Canada tour with a powerful performance at Sonia in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the group is no stranger to the U.S., with a short tour in 2023 and performances at various anime conversions last year, this journey is the group’s longest tour in its history.

Despite debuting during the COVID pandemic, the group built a loyal following via live concert streams on YouTube. Consisting of bassist Arem, guitarists Iree and Choi HyunJung, drummer YeongEun and vocalist JaYoung, the band is known for a hard rock sound that attracts not just the standard K-Pop fandom, but also metalheads from around the world.

The talented group mixed in multiple covers throughout its set, such as Mötley Crüe’s ‘Kickstart My Heart’ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’, with its stunning original songs, including the group’s most recent comeback ‘RE.BOLD’. DIADEM (the group’s fandom’s name) sang along with each song, echoing JaYoung’s raspy vocal lines in the English friendly ‘Rock’n’roll Paradise’ and ‘Holler’. The group also performed its mashup of BLACKPINK’s ‘Pink Venom’ with BTS’ ‘Mic Drop’, much to the delight of the Hallyu-loving crowd.

Each member was able to showcase their own talents and was given time to move to the center of the stage and perform energetic solos mere inches from the crowd. Yet, this wasn’t the only opportunity for Boston DIADEMs to get close to the band; VIP tickets, which ended up being most of the group, also came with selfie photos with each member, high touch and a group photo.

Even after the one hour twenty-minute show was done, DIADEMs weren’t finished; some followed the tour bus to the group’s next stop, a mere four hours away in New York City. Time will tell if those fans continue with the next 30 additional stops, concluding on May 23rd in Vancouver.
