Many of you including myself have long waited for this moment.
To me, it was like trying to reach and grab a ball that got stuck under my bed that only just touches the tip of my fingers. ‘It’s there… I see it… just…a little more…!! and yet I just can’t grab it!!!’. But with some sort of luck, it rolls back towards my hand and I FINALLY was able to get it out.
I’m sure everyone has somewhat of a similar feeling including this artist. With her numerous and amazing talents and her appearances, she was spotlighted way back in 2015 as she first appeared in JYP’s TV show, “SIXTEEN”(This legendary show brought TWICE ).
She showed sparks but it did not ignite. Soon after, she challenged herself in the first mega-scale audition program in K-Pop history, “Produce 101” and this time, she blew everyone away and claimed her throne.
After spending a successful year with her temporary family, her flame was again, settled.
But today, the wait ends, and finally, she stands alone in front of the crowd to reignite her passion.
Yes, lads, you know it. It’s Jeon SoMi and today is her “BIRTHDAY”!! Kpopmap was invited to this glorious moment and today, June 13th, I will try to share with my humble words, how her very first debut was!
The song ‘Birthday’ is a dance/hip-hop tune produced by her own label(The Black Label)’s CEO, TEDDY with a means of SOMI coming to “Birth” as a solo artist.
The song itself is composed in a fast tempo, with rhythmical rap and powerful vocals on top, generating explosive energy by combining it with SOMI’s performance for the audience.

During the interview, she shared the reason why she chose this as her title.
“I’ve listened and tried out numerous songs in order to choose the very first title of my single and ‘Birthday’, none like others, perfectly expressed my story,” SOMI commented.
Another song in the album is called, ‘Outta My Head’. It’s a slower R&B song that is composed by SOMI herself. Narrating the emotional confusion of love.

After a brief interview, we were shown, for the very first time, the music video of ‘BIRTHDAY’. Just like the title says, it’s basically SOMI’s birthday party. The whole video is full of colored balloons and confetti, you just can’t keep your eyes away from the video. The song itself has numerous dynamic changes which coincide well with the video.
This showcase was rather unique compared to others. Normally, during media showcases, the artist would perform live in front of the press to show what they have prepared and what they will be showing to the audience, but due to choreography changes, SOMI was unable to perform for this showcase.
“I wanted to show a perfect stage but I had the feeling that I wasn’t prepared enough. However, the changes are settled and I’ll be able to perform for this Saturday during the music show.” SOMI said.

The showcase was carried with a Q&A session and below are some of the questions that we wanted to share with our global audience.
1. There are on and off rumors about I.O.I being reunited, what’s your take on that?
A: I’m aware of the on-going rumors but there is no firm answer to it.
2. YG is going through some rough patch at the moment(The Black Label is an affiliate of YG Entertainment). With that, how did it affect your preparation for the album?
A: I was solemnly focused on my album and my debut. It did not affect me at all.

3. Since you have described ‘Birthday’ as a whole new start, do you think you have developed a whole new SOMI compared to your I.O.I days or would you say that you still have the SOMI from I.O.I?
A: It is not a whole new me, of course, there are some SOMI from I.O.I left and I think I have molded that to something better.
4. What would you do if you get to the first chart?
A: If my song gets on top, I will show my pictures when I was a toddler!
