From A Boy With Dreams To The Idol Of Everyone's Dreams: The Musical Evolution of ASTRO's Rocky

        Rocky's Instagram

One of the most beloved K-Pop idols of this generation, ASTRO's Rocky, was quite literally, born to be a star. Inspired by his mother's love for the superstar Rain, little MinHyuk (Rocky's real name) knew that he wanted to be his mother's object of affection and admiration just like Rain was. At a very tender age, therefore, Rocky had a clear vision of his future in his head and he was not going to wait any longer to realise his dream.

When he was only in his fifth year of elementary school, Rocky found inspiration and his first tangible goal in the musical "Billy Elliot". However, before he could actually get on stage to perform, he was given a choice between theatre and training as an idol. After much consideration, which included some influences from his parents, Rocky chose the latter, which has finally brought him to where he is today. The world gained a superstar because he chose the road that he did and we couldn't be happier.

Rocky originally debuted with the positions of rapper and dancer under his name with ASTRO. However, as fans would soon find out, that is just the tip of the iceberg. Rocky is a talented vocalist, a skilled producer and composer as well as a model! With that said, we're taking a deep dive into Rocky's personal musicality and his solo projects in an attempt to chart his growth as an artist in his own right. One thing is for certain, however - while we may be able to get a glimpse into how he has changed with each work, there's no telling what he might have in store for us next.

        'STAR'

Rocky's collaboration with Chawoo, was full of the essence of what Rocky was all about but more importantly, everything that he had to show for. It was a display of his incredible talent, a clear initiation of all that is to come. Rocky goes simple with this track, placing his skills as a rapper at the forefront, backed impeccably by his songwriting skills. He isn't using fancy tricks but rather focuses on expressing the intended feel of the song to the fullest. This is an incredible quality in an artist: knowing how to pace oneself according to the demands of a song. However, this is not to say that he doesn't draw attention. As a matter of fact, Rocky's artistry is so mature that he draws the perfect amount of attention to himself, shining in his own glory and at the same time, setting up the stage for Chawoo. 'STAR' was proof that Rocky was 'potentially' amazing; he was a fully realized master at his art.

        'Have A Good Day'

Rocky goes all out with 'Have A Good Day', letting all his leashes lose. In this track, he's experimenting with genre, flow, style and diametrically opposed concepts when it comes to performance. From employing just the right amount of autotune to set himself up followed by an unparalleled mastery of  a unique rap flow, Rocky is both hardcore yet flirtatiously smooth in his delivery. His stage presence is so unrivaled that it becomes obvious how he can command an audience to his beat. He doesn't shy away from incorporating choreography into his all-rap track and that's exactly what makes it all the more special. Now, Rocky is laying his cards out on the table one by one and we're still not used to everything he has up his sleeve. Can we just get a Rocky solo debut already?

'When The Wind Blows' & 'No I Don't'

'When The Wind Blows' is a self-composed track by Rocky and it truly shows his prowess as an artist behind the scenes. The lyrics to 'When The Wind Blows' are simple yet deeply moving. It carries a singular analogy forward and takes it to fruition through a full circle of storytelling. Despite the rather melancholic subject matter of the song, the composition is deliberately opposed. It has distinct electronic dance elements as well as some angelic vocals, which are offset by some powerful rap parts (which Rocky and JinJin absolutely nail) that make the song more and more refreshing as it progresses. As always, ASTRO makes everything sound ethereal and 'When The Wind Blows' is no exception. As a matter of fact, it could very well be the OST of a high-teen or campus romance drama.

ASTRO's special single 'No I Don't' was also co-composed by Rocky alongside other talented artists and his influence on the song is evident, especially when you place this song next to 'When The Wind Blows'. It is clear that Rocky has found his signature style and he integrates it with ASTRO's sound perfectly. If one were to listen to 'No I Don't' without knowing the lyrics, it is sure to sound like a nostalgic yet happy spring song of love. Look deeper and the layers reveal themselves.

        'Shiny Blue'

Remember when we said that Rocky's music could very well be placed as a drama OST, well 'Shiny Blue' is here to take all our blues away. 'Shiny Blue' is Rocky's very first official OST, made for the drama "DokGoBin Is Updating". Rocky captures the essence of the story beautifully and curates a bright sonic aesthetic for the OST. This song is also proof of Rocky's amazing talent as a vocalist. Is there anything he cannot do because the way he belts his notes makes him seem less of a human and more of an embodiment of perfection.

        'Our Spring'

'Our Spring' is once more an original composition by Rocky, or more appropriately Park MinHyuk, as he's officially credited for the song. Once again, the lyrics are so beautifully composed that the song feels quite like poetry sung out loud. It is indeed a special song and it shows how Rocky has poured his soul into this piece. In particular, the way he places the fast-paced rap parts at the crescendos of the song, making them chase down the vocals with the beat drop, is a genius creative choice, to say the least. ASTRO got themselves a wonder kid and it shows.

        '7days Tension'

Rocky's compositional talent naturally caught the eye of the rest of the K-Pop industry, besides fans and critics alike. He co-composed Weeekly's promotional single for Davich, '7days Tension', which is so refreshing and characteristic of Weeekly, that it might as well be the lead single for an album. Clearly, Rocky is not only adept at making music for his own group but he also understands how other artists and their styles of music work, which allows him to create a unique and inimitable musical product.

There's no end to Rocky's talent and perhaps he knows it too. We truly can't wait to see more of him in all fields, from dance and choreography to composition and production because he keeps getting better every single time. In the meantime, stream Rocky's music on his official SoundCloud here.
