IZ*ONE Kang HyeWon Under Fire After Supporting ‘Imperialist Japan’ Anime
Girl group IZ*ONE recently appeared as guests on JTBC’s ‘Idol Room’ on October 30th.
Each member began introducing themselves one by one, and when it came to Kang HyeWon’s turn, she made a controversial statement that sent South Korean netizens spiraling out of control. She claimed that she loved anime and told viewers of the show to watch ‘Attack on Titan’ season three.
“So what’s the problem with saying that?” you may ask.
The author and creator of ‘Attack on Titan’, Isayama Hajime, is known to have anti-Korean sentiments and also promotes Japanese imperialism.
Naturally, South Korean netizens have been criticizing Kang HyeWon for “not using her head”. In addition, some netizens left comments stating that she “lacks any sort of talent.”
On the other hand, some fans defended her by saying that idols have the freedom to watch whatever they want and that a lot of South Koreans also watch ‘Attack on Titan’.
There have also been comparisons of one of the characters that appear on ‘Attack of Titan’ to a real-life Japanese commander who was active in Japan’s military operations involving the invasion of Korea. Many have criticized the anime series by saying it is the same type of artwork that glorifies Nazis.
In response to this, an anonymous Twitter account shot back saying that it was ridiculous to make comparisons to Nazis as the writer did not view Koreans in the same league as the Jewish people and that Koreans were unable to improve their quality of life after the end of Japanese colonization.
Do you think it was wrong of Kang HyeWon to mention ‘Attack on Titan’?
