From Korea’s Stages to the World Stage
Before its Baeksang recognition, “Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born” was also nominated in the Limited Series category at the 2025 Banff Rockie Awards, to be held on June 9 in Banff, Canada. Securing nominations on both domestic and international stages, the drama has become a rare example of global success driven by a deeply local story.
Kim SunTae, Chief Producer at Studio Dragon, shared his appreciation:
“It’s an honor to see ‘Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born’ gaining recognition both domestically and internationally for its uniquely Korean narrative. Regardless of the results, I sincerely thank the cast, crew, and all those who have supported this project.”
Studio Dragon Dominates the Baeksang Race
The series has drawn attention for being the first K-Drama to center on gukgeuk, a traditional Korean theatrical art form combining music, dance, and drama. This culturally rich subject matter helped it break into the Global TV Top 10 according to FlixPatrol rankings. It also earned praise from international media, with TIME listing it among the 10 Best K-Dramas of 2024 and The New York Times naming it one of the Best International Shows of the Year.
Studio Dragon’s success at the Baeksang Awards goes beyond “Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born.” Actor Lee JunHyuk and Hyun BongSik from “Dongjae, the Good or the Bastard” received nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Additionally, “Study Group” earned nods for Best Technical Achievement (Action Director Cho DongHyuk) and Best New Actor (Cha WooMin).
In total, three Studio Dragon productions have earned nine nominations at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards, further cementing the studio’s reputation as a leader in Korean television.
As both domestic and international viewers look ahead to the upcoming award ceremonies, “Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born” stands out as a milestone in Korean storytelling — proving that traditional narratives, when told with heart and innovation, can resonate across the world.
