K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam: “Could it be VOTH?” Episode 3 STRAY KIDS, IZ*ONE and SUPER JUNIOR D&E Recap

K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam

On the third episode on K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam, Eric shared his intense schedule as he just got back from Okinawa to shoot his music video for his latest single, ‘Runaway’. After coming back to Korea, he was so tired and [he] snored so loud, [he] woke [him]self multiple times!! I guess the message here is that you need to have a regular sleep cycle unless you want to wake yourself up to your own snore!

Without further ado, let’s jump right into our recap of K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam EP. #3!

First up, it's  Stray Kids ’ latest release, 'Chronosaurus'! (“RAWRRR!”-Brian). STRAY KIDS released an album ‘MIROH”.

The song which is from the B-side of the album narrates about running against time and fearing it’s passing. Eric added that 'Chronosaurus' itself is scary as hell, looking like alligator meets a seal.

Eric explained how STRAY KIDS were put together as a group through a survival TV show which aired in Mnet and also listed other groups that were generated through a TV show including, IOI, WINNER , iKON , TWICE , IZ*ONE and Wanna One adding that this might be a current trend in the K-pop industry.

He shared his encounter with STRAY KIDS at 음악중심(Show! Music Core) on MBC, they came to say hi to him since, in Korean culture, a junior artist makes the rounds to say hi to senior artists. They came in and did their hand signals and chants as they introduce themselves, and Eric greeted them by saying, “Hi, I’m Eric.(He doesn’t have one since he is a solo artist)” Eric recalled that moment and said that they seemed nervous but overall very cute and endearing.

With Brian’s best intro jingle of the day, next up is IZ*ONE  with their new single “Violeta”. About falling in love with somebody and wanting that person to be vulnerable enough and trusting enough to show their true colors.

Eric expresses that the song has a somewhat similar vibe to Chungha’s 'Roller Coaster', and IZ*ONE’s first EP, 'La Vie En Rose'. Eric and Brian briefly had a fun argument about whether the song is pronounced 'V(ee)oleta', 'V(ai)oleta' or maybe 'voth'?

Also, did you know that ‘IZ’ in IZ*ONE is actually a roman numeral for 12(members) and ‘ONE’ is them being in one group? (I learn new things every day through this podcast)

Lastly for today’s episode is SM’s veteran group, SUPER JUNIOR’s 'Danger'!

Composed by SUPER JUNIOR’s DongHae, the concept for this song is more grunge, aggressive hip hop with rock vibes.

First time when Eric went to say hello to his Sunbae(Senior) group, SUPER JUNIOR, he expressed how nerve-racking it was since they were Sunbae. However, according to Eric, they were super chill, warm and welcoming to him!

In addition, Eric recommended some indie musicians in Korea!! Korean music charts are dominated by K-pop songs these days but the indie music scene is also actively growing and I love the fact that he is spreading other types of Korean music to the world!

The first recommendation is a singer-songwriter Motte’s 'Roomie', a song very chill that Eric wanted to have a glass of wine while listening. The second recommendation is Jung SeungHwan’s 'The Voyager'. Jung SeungHwan is a runner-up from K-Pop Star Season 4 and he sings a lot of traditional Korean ballad songs.

With that, it’s a wrap for the 3rd episode of K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam recap. As always, there are so many precious moments and useful information that I haven’t covered here so check the link and comment below, what your favorite moment was on this episode!
