K-Pop History: 4 Major Agencies That Stemmed From JYP Entertainment
There are approximately around 90 to 100 K-Pop entertainment agencies active in South Korea. But nevermind the numbers. What’s interesting is that JYP Entertainment was in fact, indirectly involved in the creation of some of the well-known ones such as Cube Entertainment, Big Hit Entertainment, Starship Entertainment, and MNH Entertainment.
But of course, this is not to say that the four agencies above are sub-branches of JYP Entertainment since they are all separate successful agencies on their own.
To educate yourself a little on how some of the major K-Pop labels were made, you can check out the behind story below!
Formerly known as PlayCube Entertainment during its early days of establishment, Cube Entertainment was formed by Hong SeungSung and Shin JungHwa in 2006. Hong SeungSung was a former executive producer and president of JYP Entertainment.
Some of the earliest K-Pop groups to debut under Cube Entertainment were 4Minute and Highlight (BEAST).
Because the company was founded by the former president of JYP Entertainment, many people assumed that Cube Entertainment was a branch of JYP. Cube Entertainment is, of course, a completely separate agency on its own.
Big Hit Entertainment
Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang ShiHyuk was a former producer in JYP Entertainment but later left the agency in 2005 to form his own label, resulting in the birth of Big Hit Entertainment. The two agencies have always been in close ties since Bang ShiHyuk and Park JinYoung continued to work together.
Seo HyunJu, CEO, and co-founder of Starship Entertainment was a former executive in JYP Entertainment. She left in 2008 and created Starship Entertainment with Kim ShiDae who used to work for Big Hit Entertainment.
The two founders married in the year of 2007.
MNH Entertainment was founded by the executive of 2PM‘s managing team in JYP Entertainment. The founder used to own a popular bakery before creating MNH Entertainment.
