Welcome to the ninth article of our series, "K-Pop Lyrics Explained" where we analyze the lyrics to some of your favourite K-Pop songs. Today, we're diving deep into MAMAMOO's MoonByul and SEORI's brand new collaboration track 'Shutdown'!
Before we get into what the lyrics mean, it is important to applaud MoonByul and SEORI for this much-needed WLW anthem that is not only musically brilliant but also culturally and politically significant. SEORI's feature on this song is especially relevant because she too is an icon for the queer community in the world of K-Pop. Together, they create a wonderfully sapphic ode to pure love and we could not be more thankful for this representation.
Right off the bat, "Shutdown" is all about being unapologetically in love and embracing every part of it, including the physical. MoonByul doesn't shy away from metaphorizing the act of love with flair and gusto and does so in a brilliantly feminist way that reflects an inclusive worldview.

The song tells the story of someone with a rather indifferent disposition who has nonetheless fallen for the charms of a woman. The music video establishes that this certain "someone" is herself a woman who is prepared to give her all to her beloved. The lyrics convey the essence of intimacy with reckless abandon (a shutdown) in favour of losing themselves in each other, in eternal bliss (the touchdown). Rather than being risqué, the lyrics are amorous and more importantly, honest. MoonByul and SEORI know exactly what they're doing and it is simply revolutionary, especially in an industry that is still hush-hush about queer expression.
With such a stunning pre-release, we cannot possibly imagine what the extended play will be like. MoonByul is bringing a refreshing wind of change in the industry and we're here for it.
