K-Pop idols, as icons of their fans, have many rules to follow. They must always look good for their fans, work hard to present good performances, but other than rules, they also have bans. Those are implemented by their agency and varies for each of them. One of the most well-known ban for K-pop idols is the dating ban, which prohibit an artist to date someone as long as they are under the agency. What you might not know of are those other bans K-Pop idols have to comply to.

Because of the culture difference and the image that idols have in Korea, some of those bans can come as a surprise and be upsetting to fans who wants idols to have more freedom. But those bans are also here to protect idols from scandal and other issues that could cost them their entire career, so we have to remember that it is also for the best that some of those bans exist. Now, let's see the 5 bans K-Pop idols may have other than a dating ban.

        1. Speaking in public ban

        JTBC

We often see some K-Pop idols looking cold-hearted because they barely speak in public, and it is not always their natural self, as exposed by SUPER JUNIOR's HeeChul, Go Ara, and INFINITE's L (Kim MyungSoo)  during their appearance on "Knowing Bros". All three of them have a common point, their agency banned them from being too talkative in public. That was because of the idol's image they were each given. L was ment to look elegant and mysterious, which fits a not-so-talkative kind of person. Go Ara was always portrayed as a living doll, looking perfect in all aspects, and to push this artificial doll-like personality, she was encourage to lessen her public talks. Lastly, HeeChul was often refered to as SUPER JUNIOR's Queen, and just as a queen would be silent and elegant in front of her people, HeeChul was such in front of his fans. All three of them had this sort of speaking in public ban in order to match the image their agency created for them

        2. Tattoo ban

That one seems to be less and less applied by companies as tattoo is becoming more accepted in the Korean culture, yet it still exists. Idols are not ban to get tattoos per say, but they are prohibited from showing them on live broadcast such as TV shows. That's why we often saw idols with tattoos wearing patch or some sort of clothes on their tattoo to cover them. So more than a ban it is a restriction imposed by broadcasting companies more than agencies themselves. Yet nowadays we get to have a peak at some idol's tattoos even on stage, and that is probably due to the acceptation of tattoos as an art more than anything else. But some idols still prefer to get smaller and more discreet tattoos to avoid any issue while being on stage.

        3. Eating ban

Once again, idols are not banned from eating at all, but some company do forbid them to eat certain type of food, especially during promotions to avoid them getting weight. While in this age and time, we are appreciative of all bodies and shapes, some agencies still consider that it is better for idols to remain thin and in accordance to beauty standards in South Korea. Also, very greasy or oily food are to be avoided ahead of promotions and sometimes during the promotion as well. While it does sound unfair, we should also consider how hard idols' work is, they perform everyday from morning till night, and gaining weight would probably tire them more. Once again, while this ban seems controversial, it can also be beneficial for idols' well-being.

        4. Jumping ban

This one is very specific, and probably only ATINYs, or other fans who heard of it are aware it exists. This ban only apply to one group which is no other than ATEEZ, and especially their member San. When he is too excited, San tends to jump a lot and even hang onto or grab tree branches. And while there is nothing exactly wrong with him being overly expressive, it can be dangerous for him and those around as anyone could get injured by his strong and energetic moves. And while it has been an official ban for a few years already, fans still laugh out loud about it and find it hard to take it seriously as it seems to come out of nowhere compared to other K-Pop idols' bans.

        5. Peace sign ban

We all know that the peace sign is a go-to pose for many K-Pop idols. That pose is totally allowed most of the time, but there is a period during which idols are not allowed to do it, the presidential elections. Indeed, during that important period, K-Pop idols, and other celebrities are constrained to avoid doing the peace sign as it could appear as number two as well and be mistaken for corruption. While it is a very serious temporary ban, it is very funny each time to see idols struggle not to do the peace sign, as they're so used to do it usually.
