Mnet Asian Music Awards, an awards event that usually took place in Hong Kong and Japan, is currently in a dilemma as two of the countries that it has been hosted in are currently not the best of options at the moment.
With the protests in Hong Kong still ongoing at the moment, safety is no doubt an issue. And as for Japan, well, let’s just say that the already unstable relationship between South Korea and Japan has escalated to higher levels. A substantial population of South Korea are currently boycotting anything related to Japan, so it wouldn’t make sense for Mnet to host the event over there. And the political tension has already had its fair share of negative effects on the K-Pop scene as well.
And consequently, Mnet is currently thinking of other possible countries within Asia to host the annual awards event.
South Korean K-Pop fans, who have long been frustrated over the fact that MAMA has taken place outside of Korea have been leaving comments on a popular online community, urging Mnet to use this timing to host MAMA in K-Pop’s home ground.
“Can you guys please just do it in Korea.”
“This is a Korean awards event lol so dumb.”
“Let’s do it in Busan.”
“Do it at Gocheok.”
“Why do they insist on doing it in foreign countries?”
Perhaps 2019 will be the year when domestic K-Pop fans finally get their wish in having MAMA take place in South Korea. At the moment, Mnet is still in the process of deciding which host country to choose from.
