SolBin, member of LABOUM who was also the MC for Music Bank for nearly two years has been the center of a controversy lately.
Netizens criticized the K-Pop idol for two main reasons.
The first reason was that she left abruptly without a proper final word to her fans during LABOUM‘s V APP live streaming session.
The second reason was because she didn’t address BTS member Jin in a polite tone. South Korea, where Confucian-based culture and ageism is still relatively quite strong, takes age hierarchy very seriously. It’s quite unfortunate for the nation to continue holding on to such an outdated and crude culture despite being a leader and innovator in IT and technology.
Fans thought that SolBin should have addressed Jin differently since he is five years older than her. Some fans have defended SolBin and said that the reason why she was able to address Jin the way she did was because the two were close friends.
Now, of course, this issue is mainly a South Korean issue. Why? Because people are fighting over how someone addressed another without using the honorific form. But what is your opinion on the matter? Was it wrong of SolBin to address Jin the way she did? Or should she have used an honorific form instead since Jin is five years older than her?
