She's hardly racist. Their performances are always on point. I'm honestly shocked at this rating. She may come across arrogant, but her credentials give her that right. Soyeon's a bad ass.

Do you even know what racism is? Cause I see a bunch of dumb people throwing that word around like they understand the real meaning of this. Please all those ones saying this, go and educate yourself, that way you can stop using these words so casually like it was some edgy and fashionable word for you to use, so It doesn’t make you look stupid and ignorant.

How is she racist? Did she treat someone different because of their race?
Dont say its because she wanted an African style performance because that's not racism!

It might be just me, but... I think Idle got this low rank because Fire is just not that good as a song.
It was pretty great in its time, and there's the nostalgia effect... but it's gone out of fashion since, and song production has moved ahead.
Idle did so well at the start because they had something brand new and unique that they had made even newer and fresher. While trying to pull off an old 2ne1 song, they didn't have that originality.

Gidle are so lucky to have her as Leader . And you people saying things about should shut up. Who are you to judge someone when you are not innocent either. She did not disrespect anyone but rather used this Elements for her performance. What did she do wrong. She did not mock them. The word ethnic is used in Korea in a different way . I suggest you watch ddktv on YouTube...they explain this better

Learning and studying and listening right now, right here. I see dozens of definitions of these terms by people from different backgrounds, talking about these terms for different reasons, in different contexts, and want to listen to understand what it means for everyone, putting priority on voices of minorities. I agree with what user "kori" said above, and disagree with user "Mm", who seemed to completely ignore that. It is in fact my right to add my input to this discussion like you. You may not have seen my other comments on this page, in which I hopefully made clear… Read more »

Are you a historian? Did you study cultural anthropology? Do you understand the basis, development, and historical value of culture itself. Better yet, the term racism and what it truly means and how cultural appropriation as a term should be used? If you cannot answer those without a concise or clear answer or without emotion then you need to step back. Educate yourself please and do not speak on topics of which you do not understand and possibly never will. It is not your right. While we are at it, reacting to "racism" or "appropriation" of another culture or race… Read more »

Wooow u clearly are a sensitive person who takes everything overboard! Especially the word honey. And this is coming from a mixed race person. And your entire comment was useless as none of the was racism. Stop trying to look for negatives into everything, HONEY!

No, honey, racism is much bigger than that, honey. You don't have to be interacting directly with a person of a different race for it to be racism, honey. Using media in a way that reinforces negative stereotypes about a minority, honey, also feeds into racism, honey. Can't keep the history out of a performance, honey, when history is what created the ancestor of the music in that performance, honey, and when the people watching the performance and their ancestors are all part of history, honey. And that includes you, honey.

Honey do you even know what racism means? It means when you treat someone differently in any form due to their race. When the hell did they do that! Seriously, stop bringing history into a performance!

The Indian war whoop is not cultural appropriation, it is patently racist. If you are unfamiliar with why that is, I recommend reading up on its history of use as a way to dehumanize and mock Native Americans and their culture.

This. CA (Cultural Appropriation) is a relatively new term that was used to describe the west and colonialism. The current use of the word is very broad and unclear leading to it being a fallback argument or a scare tactic. If we use the term in the ways of which it was first coined, then appropriation would affect cultures directly involved in stealing or deleting another "lesser" culture. There are degrees of which using or paying homage is acceptable and often times such uses are ignorant of the culture from which they borrow. However, screaming and having a tantrum on… Read more »

I think part of the issue is her use of the words "ethnic" and "chief" (when directing Yuqi's intro vocals), as well as the "jungle tribe" theme. This sounds like the cliche that has often been painted of indigenous peoples of Africa or Pacific islands as "savages" - in old movies, in old cartoons, it's very common. It's especially bad when it comes from a colonising country.
Soyeon's theme was far from the most offensive versions, however, and I'm certain that what she intended was simple appreciation of some really great music that inspires her.

Cultural appropriation is contextual. A lot of what "counts" as cultural appropriation is based on American society and history. South Korea is not on the same side of history and is home to a different mix of people. What's bad to say in the context of America will not be as bad in SK, or could be bad for different reasons. However, kpop is clearly catering to the global market, and global often means "America + maybe some others" so they badly need some sort of training in what's okay and what isn't. Soyeon and other kpop idols clearly have… Read more »

I didnt find anything offensive in their performance that mocked any cultures specifically the Africans as she mentioned to have used it a theme. We should learn to celebrate different cultures' artistry and stop feeling so self entitled of being hurt and overly sensitive.
