Two giant K-Pop media platforms seem to be at war, or at least that’s what South Korean netizens suspect.
The reason behind their suspicion? NCT Dream, Red Velvet, and Super Junior unit D&E, won’t be appearing on M Countdown. The calendar shows that the groups won’t be appearing on any Mnet related events.
However, this isn’t the first time that such a scenario has occurred. In fact, the two agencies did go to war before in the past as well in 2009 after an argument about a distribution deal. According to one version of the story, Mnet offered to distribute SM artists’ music, as the former was already distributing for JYP and YG. Had the deal worked out, Mnet would have become the biggest music distribution platform in the entire K-Pop industry. But unfortunately, SM Entertainment could distribute music contents well on their own and didn’t need Mnet to do it for them. After things went sour SM began boycotting Mnet in 2009 and 2010, during the golden days of Girls’ Generation and Super Junior. MAMA attendances were missed by SM artists during the period as well.
And because SM artist are currently not attending M Countdown, netizens believe another beef is ongoing between the two agencies.
Do you agree with netizens? Is something going on between SM Entertainment and Mnet again?
