The Melon Charts has long been a platform that provided questionable representations of which songs were popular in South Korea. Why? Any song would be labeled as a #1 hit as long as it maintained that position for one hour. Given that there are twenty-four hours in a day, it potentially means that the charts could have twenty-four number one hit songs per day.
Additionally, “hoarding”, when fans and brokers simultaneously stream a particular song repeatedly in order to push it up on the charts have also created problems as well.
So what could Melon have done to receive so much criticism again from netizens just overnight?
Nilo, a solo artist who released his first EP ‘About You‘ last year in October, released his single ‘Pass By‘and it has been soaring on the charts lately. What netizens find highly suspicious is the fact that the song outperformed TWICE, EXO-CBX, and WINNER as it placed number one on the charts at some time between 1 AM-4 AM, a time frame where idol group fans concentrate their mass power of numbers on streaming their idols’ songs in order to push it up on the charts. The question that netizens are asking is how could a solo artist who is barely known beat out the legions of idol fans just overnight?
Nilo’s agency, Limez Entertainment have strongly denied the accusations so far. The agency has additionally stated that Nilo was able to reach the number one spot through well-strategized social media marketing.
What is your take on the whole situation? Are netizens on to something? Or are they wrong in accusing both Melon and Nilo of having some sort of unfair arrangement?
