Yuseong Hot Spring (유성온천지구)

Yuseong Hot Springs is located at the center of Daejeon. The hot spring is known to be effective in countering many kinds of maladies. The water here contains alkaline minerals such as calcium, and potassium, sulphur, carbonic acid, silicic acid and radium. An especially high concentration of radium is found here. Such alkaline hot springs are known to be good for treating neuralgia and geriatric diseases. Nearby are large accommodations with many convenient facilities, which make it easy to visit here while touring. Yuseong Hot Springs has long been associated with cranes. During the final days of Baekje Kingdom, a man who was the only son and heir of a family for seven generations was seriously wounded during a war with Silla. His mother worried greatly over her son’s wounds. One day she saw a crane with a wounded wing dip itself into a hot spring in the midst of snow covered ground and healed. She took her son there and his wound was healed as well so the legend goes. Perhaps because of this legend, the Yuseong Hot Springs is famous for its incredible healing properties.

Ppuri Park (뿌리공원)

Ppuri Park, located between Bomunsan Mountain and Banghwasan Mountain in Chimsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, is a park created under the theme of filial piety, one of the overriding values of Korean society. Opened on November 1, 1997, the park occupies a plot of land measuring 109,091 m² and is filled with unique sculptures and art pieces that remind visitors of their family ties. The sculptures at the park hold a special meaning for Koreans, as each of the 136 sculptures represents each of the different last names of Korea. On the front of each sculpture is the history of the family (name) and on the back is a description of the sculpture itself and other relevant information. Other main points of interest at Ppuri Park include the Deep-rooted Spring (symbolizing the 12 jisin/12 gods of the earth), waterfront stage, grass square, traffic safety education center, recreational forest, and natural observatory. National Science Museum (국립중앙과학관)

The National Science Museum is a scientific culture facility which studies and exhibits various scientific materials. At its center is the Astronomical Hall, which is the largest dome in Korea. From here you can vividly see the phenomenon of the celestial sphere and the human development of space. It also has the only world-class space theater in Korea. The 242 seats are available on a first-come first-serve basis. It can re-create the appearance of a night sky, the highlight being the view of the starlight at the planetarium. The Astrovision is also a special visual device, giving a magnificent and realistic view of space development. There are exhibits featuring about 4000 items based on nature and natural science at the Permanent Exhibit Hall. There are also exhibit halls featuring Korean nature, weapons, and folk musical instruments. You can see the stages of collecting energy from nature, and its use in transportation. Outside the Hall is Cheomseongdae, a weather evaluating machine from the Goryeo period; models of plant-eating dinosaurs; and a steam engine. The exhibits help to easily understand the theories of science, and the wonders of nature. The museum has a movie theater. Science movies and other excellent movies are shown at 11am and 2pm every day, and the seating can accommodate 776 people.

Leeungno Museum (이응노 미술관)

Leeungno Museum is a neat little white building surrounded by pine trees, located next to the Daejeon Museum of Art. The museum was designed by French architect Laurent Beaudouin to commemorate the life and work of the artist Goam Lee Ungno (1904-1989), who devoted his whole life to the modernization and globalization of Korean tradition through architecture. The four halls in the museum give the feeling of all flowing together into one continual, unified space. The building pays homage to Lee’s life and works, dating from his early ventures to his final days. Just as Goam’s work epitomized the harmony between East and West, it is very interesting to note that the architecture of the museum reflects the combined efforts of Lee Ungno, the Korean artist, and Laurent Beaudouin, the French architect. In March 2010, ‘Sudeoksa Temple Museum of Art,’ the first Buddhism Museum of Art opened in Sudeoksa Temple in Yesan, also showcasing the life and work of Goam.

Jinjamhyanggyo Confucian School (진잠향교)

Jinjamhyanggyo Confucian School was established to enshrine and orient the ancestral tablet of excellent classical scholars in 1405 (the 5th year of King Taejong's reign) and to educate people. More detailed information is not available in the record. The remaining building is called Daeseongjeon, and the ancestral tablets are 5 Seong, Songju 6 hyeon, and Korean 18 hyeon. One instructor, who received a plot of land and slaves from the nation, taught 30 students during the Joseon period, but after the Gapo Reform, the educational function disappeared and Seokjeon, a religious ceremony, was served in summer and fall with offerings of incense on the first day of each month and at the half-moon instead. Daeseongjeon (Cheongju Daeseong High School (Former Main Building of Cheongju Commercial High School) is designated as Registered Cultural Heritage No. 6.

Jeongsimhwa Hall of Jeongsimhwa International Cultural Center at Chungnam National University (충남대학교 정심화국제문화회관)

The Jeongsimhwa International Cultural Center is the large building on the right, just past the gate of Chungnam National University. ‘Jeongsimhwa’ is the Buddhist name of Ms. Lee Bok-Soon, who donated her lifetime savings (a total of five billion won) to the university back in 1990. She had earned the money over the course of many years by selling gimbap (rice rolled in seaweed), which currently sells for only 1,000 or 2,000 won a roll. The cultural center was built in commemoration of the late Ms. Lee. After a series of setbacks and through the effort of many helping hands, construction was finally completed in 2000. The Jeongsimhwa Hall at the center has 1,817 seats and is used for concerts, performances, and other large-scale events. Baekma Hall (450 seats) and Daedeok Hall (200 seats) are used primarily for seminars. For visitors’ convenience, the Jeongsimhwa International Cultural Center has a parking area with space for up to 268 cars.

Jagwangsa Temple (자광사(대전))

Legend has it that the region of Hakhadong was where the gods lived when they periodically came down from the heavens. When the Jagwangsa Temple was built in the district, Song Siyeol saw it as a sign and created a village school near the temple to train his pupils. It was his hope that the sacred land would aide in the raising of gifted students who would grow to serve their community and country. When building the school, Song Siyeol also planted a juniper tree that, 300 years later, still proudly stands by Jagwangsa Temple. Upon entering the temple area, visitors will find to their left the Seongjeonnyeongdangji Memorial Stone, which serves to commemorate Song Siyeol and his school. Next to the memorial stone is a pond in which carp swim lazily around lotus flowers. To the left is a large bell which is rung every day, 28 times in the morning and 33 times in the evening. To the right is the main Dharma Hall. Not just a serene and beautiful building, the 3-story temple also houses artifacts such as the Beopgo, Mogeo, and Unpan, Buddhist instruments used during rituals to cleanse the mind of pain and doubt. Also inside the grand, 3-story temple are numerous signs and wall hangings engraved with Buddhist inscriptions.

Hanbat Museum of Education (한밭교육박물관)

Hanbat Museum of Education (est. July 10, 1992) is home to 7 exhibition halls, 3 smaller exhibition areas, and outdoor exhibit areas displaying a total of 27,000 pieces of education-related items such as old school textbooks, educational books, student files, stationery, and more. The museum is particularly popular as a fieldtrip destination for area students. Exhibition chambers at the museum house documents and items that bear witness to the history of education from the olden days (i.e. village Confucian schools) to the present. Also on display are folk materials on the ancient educational institutions of the past and the daily lives of students. Thanks to the extent and variety of its documents, the museum is a great educational institution that not only preserves the history of education in Korea, but also sheds light on hundreds of years of life, tradition, and culture. The museum building, built on June 8th, 1938, is the oldest one in the city. Used as a school and later a military base for the U.N. Peace Corps and North Korean soldiers during the Korean War, the building has never been renovated and still bears the bullet holes and other marks of its tumultuous history. In recognition of its historical importance as a local structure, the museum was designated Cultural Property Material No. 50.

Hanbat Arboretum (한밭수목원)

Geological Museum (지질박물관)

The Geological Museum located in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon-si, is the nation’s first comprehensive museum dedicated to geology. The museum (est. 2001) boasts an architectural design inspired by the breastplate of a Stegosaurus and is divided into a main hall, 2 exhibition rooms, a show room, an outdoor exhibition area, and a special exhibition hall. The Main Hall of the museum is all about dinosaurs and is packed with fossils and other dinosaur-related items. Daejeon O-World (대전오월드)

Daejeon O-World was established when the Daejeon Zoo and Joy Land, an amusement park, were integrated under the supervision of the Daejeon City Corporation. The project cost a whopping 40 billion won and resulted in the construction of Flower Land (100,000㎡) in addition to the renamed Zoo Land and the preexisting Joy Land. It opened on May 1, 2009 to the public. The three main sections of Daejeon O-World are Zoo Land, Joy Land, and Flower Land. Zoo Land is currently home to a total of 600 animals of 130 different species including American black bears, Bengal tigers, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and ostriches. Amusement rides, waterslides, and four-season sledding are housed at Joy Land. Flower Land boasts a number of smaller sections such as Rose Garden, Four Season Garden, Herb Garden, and Maze Garden and is home to a total of 150,000 tress of 100 different species and 200,000 flowers of 85 different species. An outdoor stage and concert hall are also located in the area. There are plenty of things to see and enjoy in every corner of Daejeon O-World. Just beyond Festival Street, visitors will find a large (3,000㎡) pond with a fountain.
