YG Entertainment’s idol groups WINNER and iKON are important assets to the entertainment agency as it needs younger idol groups to ensure the company’s competitive edge within the K-Pop market once BIGBANG‘s popularity comes to and in the future.
And just recently, WINNER fans were in uproar when an iKON VCR was played during a WINNER concert.
Consequently, this has lead South Korean fans and netizens to talk about which of the two groups were more prominent within the K-Pop scene.
But given that modern K-Pop deals with two different markets, domestic and international, it’s worth taking into account the amount of popularity of both groups in both markets.
One South Korean netizen believes that YG supported iKON substantially more than WINNER and attempted to make B.I into the next G-Dragon, but ultimately failed to do so. Another stated that WINNER was much more popular in South Korea while iKON was more popular internationally.
In addition, individual members of WINNER seem to be loved by the South Korean public slightly more than members of iKON as well, due to their frequent appearances on TV shows.
Do you agree with South Korean fans’ view on the two idol groups?
