SuperM Debuts No.1 On Billboard 200 But Some People Are Asking Questions

Some netizens believe that SuperM reaching number one on Billboard 200 with their debut was nothing to congratulate.

They feel that the number one ranking doesn’t reflect how many people actually listen to the group’s music.

According to BuzzFeed:

“Those numbers are practically unheard of in an era almost entirely dominated by streaming. Every 1,500 song streams counts as the equivalent to one sale, meaning SuperM’s seven-track album was streamed around 4.9 million times over the course of its first week.

The No. 2 spot went to Summer Walker, whose debut album Over It earned 134,000 equivalent units — only 14,000 of which came from album sales. In comparison to SuperM, Over It gained almost 155 million streams in its first week.”

In addition there have also been some fans of SuperM pointing out that the promotions through text were just too much.

But one netizens also pointed out that bundles have been a common practice used among many artists and their agencies as well.

How do you feel about SuperM’s recent number one spot on Billboard 200?

I think having mini album is not bad
But it’s disappointing if it will be based on bundle to get on the top. Should they appreciate a victory like that. Because of bundle they reach the top. Not because people love and enjoy listening to their music.just thinking…

This is ridiculous how the charts are run these days. Mini albums with only five songs, bundles, merchandise sales equaling an album bought?? If the cd or cassette is bought outright or someone buys the entire digital album this should be the only ways it should count. And the album should be a full album. I see too often now all these mini albums with the KPop music. Doing whatever to make more money but not putting all the work into it.

I think it’s gotten out of hand . I would rather see 12 different versions of a album instead of t shirts and 60+ different items used as an album sale. If I choose to buy 4 versions it’s a physical copy of the music, that’s what counts. All them downloads were given for people to continue to use just for a BB count as they so bravely sputter time after time on their site. This is a disgrace, and send the wrong message to others that trying to break into the market. Hell if it’s that easy to pay… Read more »

I don’t follow Billboard. It’s heavily manipulated by people with money and the elite in the music industry, pretty much like the grammy’s, the emmy’s etc. They will promote and write good articles about people they like and whoever it is that will give them good business. I follow youtube and youtubers, their works and music, because it’s controlled by the masses and normal people like you and I, people who work 9 to 5 and walk the streets without being recognized.

Taylor Swift has pretty much done the same thing, BUNDLES. Yet, she didn’t get slammed for it. But when koreans do it, they get heavily criticized. White, blonde, blue eyed celebrities get all the praises when get number 1 in sales, doesn’t matter how they do it.

Taylor’s bundle was comparable to a free popsicle with every purchase. SM went above and beyond when their single didn’t. chart as high as they thought. Just like DJ Khalid had his sales taken away because of bundling so should Super M.
