The K-Pop Singer Who Turned Down SM, YG, & JYP Entertainment
If anyone was approached by either SM, YG, or JYP Entertainment, it’s probably likely they would have signed with one of the agencies.
However, for Oh Hyuk, he did the opposite. He actually turned down all three agencies.
That itself says a lot about who he, as it seems that he has a clear idea of what kind of artistry and career he is aiming for.
Oh Hyuk in the past auditioned for all three agencies and was accepted by all three as well.
So why exactly did Oh Hyuk change his mind about joining one of the big three K-Pop agencies?
For starters, he cited differences in creative directions as the main reason. He stated:
“During my high school years, SM suggested I move to Seoul to work with them but I felt that our colors didn’t really match. I wasn’t in to dancing and I’ve also never listened to songs made by SM. And besides, the way I look also probably won’t fit.”
Of course, he was temporarily working with YG’s subsidiary la el HIGHGRND but eventually went separate paths.
Oh Hyuk is a great example of how one doesn’t necessarily follow the typical process of becoming a K-Pop star that usually involves training under an agency and competing with other trainees to make it to the debut lineup.
In fact, cases such as Oh Hyuk and other similar artists are smaller in number in comparison to the massive number of K-Pop idol groups currently active in the scene.
And after following his heart to create music that he wanted to make in the K-Pop scene, he also was able to pursue other interests as well such as fashion. He is well known within the global fashion community and has been heavily influenced by punk rocker and skater fashion.
