K-Pop idols and celebrities learn all kinds of dance styles, but what about the ballerinas of the Korean entertainment world?
Kianna, Staff WriterK-Pop idols and celebrities are trained in many different aspects to succeed in their career. From acting classes to vocal lessons, and even English classes, idols are trained in many different ways! One of the ways idols can get trained is through dance lessons. They are taught different dance styles so they can perfectly execute any choreography given to them for a comeback.
While many idols have never trained in dancing before or are veterans in the craft, many studied two particular dance styles: ballet and contemporary dance. Numerous idols are experienced in these particular fields and learning these dance styles is what led them to become idols in the first place. From the ones you already knew about to some that may shock you, here are 7 K-Pop idols and celebrities who studied ballet or contemporary dance.
If you're a seasoned BTS fan then you already are familiar with JiMin's background in contemporary dance. The idol dancer has trained in the art for years now and began his journey in middle school. JiMin was one of the top dance students at his high school and his skills show it. Even when he is doing choreography for his group, fans notice that JiMin's feet are sometimes in a ballet foot position, possibly coming from his years of training!
EXO's Kai was training to become a full-fledged ballerino before he decided to join SM Entertainment. Starting from a young age, Kai's love for ballet started at a very young age. He was enrolled in ballet classes when he was a child and when his sister introduced him to the world of K-Pop, he dreamed of being an idol. Kai being a ballerino may come as a shock to many as his dancing focuses more on hip-hop dances but his ballet skills still shine when he shows off how clean and smooth he dances.
A ballerina-turned-idol, LE SSERAFIM's Kazuha has an interesting history with ballet. Kazuha studied ballet when she was young and went to prestigious ballet academies around the world to train. She was on the path to being a professional ballerina but soon switched careers when she was personally scouted to join her current group. The ballerina inside her never left and she shows off many impressive ballerina moves and twirls in some of the group's dances. One of the notable ones was her dance moves in LE SSERAFIM's song 'Blue Flame'.
TWICE's Mina was a casual ballerina before joining her group but her ballet skills still shine in her dancing. She did ballet as a hobby for nearly 11 years before she quit and became a K-Pop idol under JYP. Mina dances very elegantly and her ballet skills shine when she does a special stage focusing on a ballet piece. Mina is so pretty and elegant that her studying ballet fits her perfectly! Her skills stood out to us when she did her rhythmic gymnastics routine for the Idol Olympics.
NCT's HaeChan dances elegantly and sharply due to this training in contemporary dance and ballet. As a student of both dance styles, HaeChan's dancing always stands out to people because of his extensive training in the arts. His turns in NCT's 'Black On Black' showed off just how much he has mastered these dance styles.
Song Kang's history with ballet is a unique one! The famous K-Drama actor did not have any prior training in ballet until he became the lead role in the drama series "Navillera." In the series, Song Kang plays the main character who is a financially struggling ballerino. To properly portray his character well, Song Kang studied ballet for nearly half a year. Not only was he able to connect more with his character due to, but he also gained a new skill that he never imagined having!

Ishani Sarkar, Kpopmap EditorYou don't need to be Korean to be a K-Pop idol! When young kids all over the world dreaming of standing on South Korea's stage first realized this, a whole new world opened up in front of them. From BLACKPINK's Lisa to TWICE's MiSaMo, BLACKSWAN's Fatou, GOT7's Jackson Wang, Lapillus' Chanty, ChoCo's Anpan, X:IN's Aria, SECRET NUMBER's Dita, KISS OF LIFE's Natty and many more - some of the most beloved and successful K-Pop idols across generations have been foreign, and they have been embraced not just by Koreans but K-Pop fans globally. The immense heights that these foreign K-Pop idols reached quickly proved that talent cannot be bound by borders. So, the ultimate global talent hunt is on, and K-Pop companies are gearing up to find the next big star through worldwide K-Pop auditions.
In the beginning, when the second generation of K-Pop was advancing in full force towards expansion in Asia, the presence of a non-Korean member in an idol group was a reflection of this development. Soon after, as Hallyu crash-landed on the farthest corners of the world, leading to the steady globalization of K-Pop, we saw even more trailblazers like Taiwanese idol Amber Liu in f(x), Thai-American Nichkhun in 2PM and Sriya Lenka from India in BLACKSWAN. As such, foreign K-Pop idols have always been indicative of K-Pop's transnational impact.
We have also recently seen the rise of the 1st generation of global pop groups coming out of the K-Pop industry, such as all-Filipino group HORI7ON, JYPE's American girl group VCHA trained in the K-Pop system, HYBE's global girl group KATSEYE, and many more, which has opened the doors to endless possibilities for aspiring K-Pop idols all over the world.
It is quite natural, therefore, that in the current landscape, it is standard practice for K-Pop companies to seek out talent from all over the world for their idol groups. From the big 4 - HYBE, SME, YGE, and JYPE to more diverse companies like MLD Entertainment, WAKEONE, Kakao Entertainment, and ChoCo Entertainment - everyone wants to nurture the next big global star in K-Pop and to do so, inviting global applicants is a must. After all, amidst the fierce competition that defines the K-Pop industry, those who can swiftly identify and recruit from diverse talent pools first emerge victorious. The world is witnessing the globalization of the K-Pop dream, and the industry is catching up.
The latest hot spot for K-Pop companies to find the next diamond of K-Pop is India. Yes, the country known for its rich culture and heritage is also emerging as the goldmine for finding future K-Pop idols with the potential to take the world by storm.
Following Sriya Lenka's impactful debut in BLACKSWAN as the first Indian K-Pop idol, it was Aria, also from India, who debuted in X:IN, going viral at once for her charming visuals and talent. Both idols received immense love from K-pop fans all over the world and are moving forward in their careers, achieving one milestone after another. Sriya recently walked the runway for the brand GREEDILOUS at the 2024 F/W Seoul Fashion Week, and Aria is currently preparing to debut as a part of the multinational project K-Pop group Triple iz.
