A post on a popular online community in South Korea was recently debating over whether NCT member Jeno’s behavior towards fellow group member ChenLe, was acceptable.
ChenLe is a foreigner member of the group, and so it is fair to say that his reading skills in Korean isn’t as fluent as the Korean members.
When ChenLe was reading out loud something in Korean in a somewhat slow and “un” fluent manner, Jeno began to appear frustrated and beat his chest.
A post that criticizes Jeno has been uploaded soon after.
“Reflect upon your actions Jeno, how many times have you done this.
Even if it’s a joke, who pounds their chest when someone is talking…
NCT should be more cautious about Xenophobia.
I feel bad when some of the foreign members lose face and tell themselves that they can’t speak Korean well.”
And below are some of the comments regarding the post. Judging by what some of the comment writers have been saying, the issue that they are bringing up doesn’t seem to be related to whether ChenLe and Jeno are close , as it is very evident through past instances that the two are close friends, but what netizens are getting at seem to be Jeno’s attitude towards ChenLe’s struggle to read Korean fluently.
“Wasn’t Jeno a foreigner..? Is Jeno Korean???”
“I know a guy like that and every time I can’t understand something, he pounds his chest like that and it really hurts someone’s pride. If a Korean feels that way, how much worse would a foreigner feel.”
“Yes he did wrong. He can fix it after receiving criticism for it.”
“Is he for real…? Does he not realize that his behavior shouldn’t be like that in front of the camera.”
“I know that you guys want to bring him down, but can you guys at least change the title of the post”
“I’m a fan and I admit he did wrong, but this isn’t something that’s worth dragging all the way over here to talk about.”
“This is why NCT can’t get big. Their character is written all over on their faces.”
“Jeno just did a “jenophobic” LOL.”
