On Jan. 14, it was announced by the Ministry of Education that they have cancelled the university degrees of 7 celebrities that include Highlight‘s KiGwang, DooJoon, JunHyung, BTOB‘s EunKwang, SungJae, ex-BEAST‘s member Jang HyunSeung and singer Chu GaYeoul.
The reason for the cancellation is due to the fact that they have found out that these celebrities had received special treatment.
When the news were made known, many fans became confused by the sudden announcement and started to trend a hashtag on Twitter, asking the university to explain the situation.
One fan decided to take action and summarized the reasons of why fans are angry at the sudden cancellation of the university degrees.
Firstly, prior to enrolling into the university, it was mentioned that the school had agreed to recognize the attendance of the celebrities through their broadcast activities.
Second, as these celebrities tend to be busy with their schedules, it was also agreed that they could promote as ambassadors of the school, give vocal lessons and so on in exchange for credits and attendance.
Thirdly, these celebrities had graduated by fulfilling the terms and conditions placed by the school.
Lastly, in 2019, it was suddenly announced that the credits and classes replaced by broadcast activities were not acknowledged and as a result, causing these celebrities to not qualify for graduation.
In other words, the Ministry of Education deemed the school to have given the celebrities special treatment as they were unable to fulfill the basic attendance for graduation.
Fans commented that the school had ‘used’ the celebrities as they ended up cancelling their degrees after everything they had done for the school. In addition to that, some fans also felt that the school’s administrative department was lacking.
One Korean media outlet also reported the suspicion by some, questioning if the university had ‘used’ the celebrities and ‘threw’ them away now that they do not need them.
