Koreans are consumers of webtoons, webnovels, and books, but have you ever wondered what genre they prefer? And who consumes what?

Korea Culture and Tourism Institute answered these questions with their new report "Content Industry Trend Brief No. 24-2" released on March 12th. Through surveys, they find out what Koreans consume in webtoons, webnovels, and books in general, by gender, and by age.

The data of their survey was based on 2,000 men and women aged 20 to 64 in Korea who allocated gender, age, and region in proportion to the population. They answered web questionnaires between December 8, 2023, and December 12, 2023.

The most preferred genre in webtoons and webnovels by Koreans is romance (21.7%), followed by fantasy (16.5%), comic (14.2%), daily life (13.1%), action (9.8%), martial arts/historical (7.5%), thriller (5.5%), superhero (2.5%), BL (2.4%) and more. Men prefer fantasy, comic, and action while women prefer romance, daily life, and BL genre for webtoons and webnovels.

The most preferred book genre by Koreans is novel (27.3%), followed by self-improvement (18.0%), humanities/society/history (17.4%), economy/management (9.8%), manhwa (9.2%), poetry/essay (3.9%), art/culture (3.1%), hobbies/entertainment (2.7%), science/technology/engineering (2.5%), etc. In books, Korean men prefer self-improvement, while women prefer novels, poems, and essays. Young people prefer self-development and the elderly prefer humanities/society/history and health.
