Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Tara Denneny shared a research study to Psychology Today about the two tests that a couple must survive in order to feel satisfied in their relationship: (1) Partner’s way of dealing with the issues in relationship, and (2) Partner’s reaction to good news. According to Denneny, to survive the first test and receive the reward of “satisfaction in one’s relationship,” the couple’s way of communicating their issues must be, “active-constructive.” This means, whenever problems arise in the relationship, the couple will talk about those setbacks and will constantly look for ways to resolve the issues.

Validating partner’s perspectives, verbalizing one’s opinion to the issues, suggesting solutions that will benefit both people involved in the relationship, recognizing one’s mistakes, doing things that can lower one’s negative emotions (i.e. temporarily stepping away from the conflict,) and giving forgiveness to one’s partner are the keys to achieve active-constructive way of dealing with the issues to one’s relationship.

As for the second test, the individual must shared the enthusiasm that their partner feels toward the positive news they got. According to Denneny, it’s easier to share enthusiasm with one’s partner when the individual is constantly taking care of their mental health.

So with the science-based criteria of measuring relationship satisfaction: (1) active-constructive way of dealing with the issues in the relationship, and (2) sharing enthusiasm with partner’s feelings toward good news, which of these 2023 fantasy K-Drama couples do you think will pass the two relationship tests?
