5 Korean Variety Shows We Would Love To Have A New Season This Year

MBC / tvN / TVING

Much like K-Dramas and K-Pop, Korean variety shows are becoming a staple source of entertainment for global fans. With their various interesting concepts that often center around comedy, thrillers, game shows, adventures, slice-of-life, romance, historical facts, and reality. Korean variety shows have no doubt been added under the must-watch category on various platforms by fans.

When it comes to casting, it could be said that 80% of the casts of many variety shows are by celebrities, who either play the hosts, recurring or guest stars in these shows. This no doubt adds to the value and popularity of these shows as many tune in to see their favorite stars in a more laid-back and often comical setting. Beyond just the comedy, many variety shows also serve as a point to showcase the personalities of these stars beyond the glitz and glamour of the stage / screen which makes fans connect more with them as well.

There have been a host of variety shows released, practically uncountable, some of them have ended and others are still ongoing. In this listicle, we will be sharing some of the variety shows we would love to have a new season this year.

1. "It's Dangerous Beyond The Blankets"

"It's Dangerous Beyond The Blankets" is a variety show that brought together a host of homebodies (individuals who always prefer to stay at home than go out) from various fields to the same house for a chance for them to mingle with individuals with like-minded personalities and actions. With 2 seasons, this series starred some of our favorite idols and actors like EXO's XiuMin, Kang Daniel, Kim MinSeok, NCT's Mark, Lee YiKyung, and Loco to name a few. It gained massive popularity because of the awkward yet funny tension amongst the cast that gradually shifted to playful and hilarious banter. Although we have no idea why it stopped at season 2, this year, we would like a new season of the show and starring either the previous cast mates or a new crop of stars.

2. "Coffee Friends"

"Coffee Friends" was a wholesome TV show that didn't just make the troupe of customers craving delicious food and drinks from its famous cast very happy and satisfied but the viewers as well. Following famous actors Yoo YeonSeok, Son HoJun, Choi JiWoo, and Yang SeJong, matching its title name, the show created a friendly and warm atmosphere where people could come and enjoy delicious foods made by these celebrities and a host of their famous helpers (friends) who made guest appearances like EXO's SeHun, TVXQ's YunHo, Nam JooHyuk etc. The show was well received by many fans as it showed these stars were passionate about everything they do and were committed to giving their best at all times while also making the hearts of many fans flutter with their adorable interactions and thoughtful actions.

3. 'Idol Dictation Contest"

The TV show tests the knowledge of K-Pop idols on everything from food to music, movies, and pop-culture moments while giving viewers a dose of comedy and hilarity in between the brain-cracking questions. In its 2 seasons, the show has had a long list of famous idols like EXO's Kai, VIXX's Ravi, Golden Child's Lee JangJun, Stray Kids' Lee Know, Lee MiJoo, Choi YeNa, SUPER JUNIOR's EunHyuk and comedian JaeJae cast as recurring members while with each new episode, it also introduces other famous idols as guest stars. This shows entertainment value is very high as it doesn't just serve as an insight and exposes viewers to some of the interesting facts about Korea or the entertainment industry, but the tiki-taka banter amongst the cast members are also very hilarious.

4. "Mafia Game In Prison"

Take the famous and chaotic mafia game, throw in some hilarious personalities, put them in a prison setting, and watch the mayhem that ensues. "Mafia Game In Prison" is perhaps one of the most entertaining Korean variety shows ever. Combining both physical and mental strengths, it brings together famous celebrities separated into two different teams and following a series of games, will have to guess who the mafia is amongst themselves. Its 1st season starred a list of celebrities like GOT7's Jay B, SEVENTEEN's SeungKwan, Lee SangYeob, Lee SooGeun, Choi YeNa, etc. Even though it was first released in 2019 and there hasn't been another season since then, we hope we get a new season this year as its concept and delivery were simply amazing.

5. "Celebrity Bromance"

"Celebrity Bromance" or as it is popularly called "Celeb Bros" is a paparazzi-type shot variety shows that showcases the friendship of 2 famous male celebrities. In this almost day-in-the-life kind of content, these celebrities are captured while participating in fun activities together while also sharing candid and touching stories about their experiences and goals as artists. In its seasons, the show has seen many stars like BTS' V, JungKook, Nam JooHyuk, Kim MinJae, GOT7's Jackson Wang, MONSTA X's JooHoney, Highlight's Lee GilKwang, and Son DongWoon to name a few being a cast. Perhaps it could be tagged as one of a kind, as its concept was truly amazing and one that no doubt has been greatly missed by many fans. We hope to see a new season of the show this year as well.
