K-Pop has indeed turned into a global phenomenon. Billboard details that the genre is now one of the most popular in the world, beating out hip hop and electronic music due to the millions of streams it receives daily. And while the elusive Grammy nomination still escapes K-Pop groups, there's no questioning their popularity outside of Korea.

In fact, K-Pop supergroup BIGBANG will end its two-year hiatus at this year's iteration of the Coachella Music Festival. Indeed, the genre's popularity knows no borders. Unsurprisingly, this has lead to the rise of more and more collaborations between K-Pop artists and artists from outside Korea. And while this may be a popular trend now, R&B guitarist Justin Lyons has been way ahead of the curve as he's been working with BIGBANG since 2012. If you're curious about this and want to know more, read on to learn about Justin Lyons and how he got involved with one of the biggest groups in the world!

        Who Is Justin Lyons?

Justin Lyons has always been good with guitars. He started playing at the guitar when he was five-years-old, inspired by the greats such as B.B. King. When he was old enough to work, Lyons started on his journey to becoming one of the most respected professional musicians working in the industry today. He's worked with Grammy award-winning artist Chrisette Michelle, producing her 6-track project The Lyricist Opus. He's also released his own work in the form of tracks such as Little Girls and Emotion Sickness.

Indeed, the success Lyons has earned throughout his career stems from his impeccable creative and technical talent when it comes to guitar playing — talent that has garnered him the nickname ‘Guitarslayer’. But such talent doesn't come without a borderline neurotic approach to the music-making process. Lyons utilizes the seven-band Boss GE-7 equalizer pedal, which ranges from 100Hz to 6.4kHz, to have precise control over his unique guitar tones. He also makes use of a Justin Lyons custom string set from Cleartone Strings, as it helps him achieve the exact sound that he is going for. There is a method to his madness, as this absurd level of attention to detail is what has made Lyons one of today's premiere music professionals.

So how did the Dallas based R&B guitarist end up working with the legendary K-Pop group BIGBANG? Well, the two parties met through BIGBANG's label YG Entertainment. They were preparing to go on tour, which means they needed world-class musicians to support them as they wow arenas worth of diehard fans from all over the world.

Lyons was touring with Vivian Green at the time but got an audition with BIGBANG via Gil Smith (who also happens to be Lil Wayne's music director). Lyon's landed the gig and has since performed for millions of people in sold-out stadiums across Asia. This gig changed his life forever, as it paved the way to many musical endeavors and business opportunities such as endorsements from guitar brand PRS, Cleartone Strings, and Novation. Lyons truly has made it — just not in the way that he imagined when he first strummed along to B.B. King.
