We’ve seen many comebacks, especially from girl groups and female soloists in the K-Pop industry. One of the most anticipated releases this year were from aespa, EVERGLOW, Jeon SoMi and HwaSa to mention a few, and they have not failed to wow us once again. However, some releases came much later in the summer, and we’re here to touch on that.
As we’ve seen releases of single albums, mini albums or EPs, and full albums, there are some that are overall more enjoyable and memorable to listen to. In this article, we’ll breakdown the 6 most enjoyable releases by girl groups and female soloists in summer of 2023. No doubt these albums are loop material in your playlist.
1. NewJeans – “Get Up”
It seems almost obvious that NewJeans’s mini album makes this list. Like, they have released banger after banger at this point that to be expected. Songs on this new album like ‘ETA’ and ‘Super Shy’ were upbeat and danceable, and were unique to NewJeans style of music. ‘Cool With You’ was quite new for the group, but that went even father to show fans just how soothing their vocals are. Well, as if fans didn’t know that already. Either way, the album is much too enjoyable and was very perfect for summer.
2. Lapillus – “GIRL’s ROUND Part. 2”
We certainly needed a powerful girl anthem type song for the summer, so we’re glad to see one of your favourite girl groups, Lapillus, delivering. Their album name is just explanatory of the songs on the album which are generally about girl power and influence. Special love goes to b-sides ‘Marionette’ and ‘ULALA’ which are much too addictive to listen to, making them summer staples already. Go, girls!
3. TWICE's JiHyo – “ZONE”
All ONCE around the world were elated to hear the news of the TWICE’s leader making her solo debut. Of course, it was overdue considering the idol began training as early as eight years old. Her debut EP— as expected— is not one to forget. Tracks on the album showcase her powerful vocals as well as vocal and language versatility. The title track ‘Killin’ Me Good’ is an absolutely summer banger, and b-sides like ‘Wishing On You’ and ‘Don’t Wanna Go Back’ are just as delightful to listen to.
4. Jeon SoMi – “GAME PLAN”
It had been a long year and a half since SoMi graced fans with a new release, and since it took that long, you bet her fans were expectant of nothing short of the best. That went without question that SoMi delivered, especially with her viral track and subsequent TikTok challenge song, ‘Fast Forward’. Her other brilliant b-sides like ‘Pisces’ and ‘The Way’ expose us to her versatile vocal tone, making us— and some other fans, we reckon— nostalgic and glad. SoMi definitely blessed our summer this year.
5. STAYC – “TEENFRESH”
Fresh indeed! STAYC are known for their teenage-esque girl tracks, and this album was no less that. Though the EP showed its dynamic nature through the b-side ‘Wanna Do’, it was still sprinkle with that signature STAYC sound. With ‘Bubble’ as their title track, the album is easily one of the best releases from a girl group this summer.
6. Choi YeNa – “HATE XX”
This single album once again portrayed the playfulness of Choi YeNa. The lead track, ‘Hate Rodrigo’ was received with enthusiasm from fans, even more so because she featured her fellow 99 liner friend and idol, (G)I-DLE’s YuQi. The fun track depicts the fun of summer, but the other song on the album, ‘Wicked Love’ was a total 360 from what we’ve seen from the soloist so far. That didn’t make it any less enjoyable of course, and we’re happy for the refreshing change and duality the album has.
