The one thing K-Pop fans love about it is the variety. Different concepts, different emphases (say JYP is very dance-focused and YG is very rap-focused), and so many other reasons. With the fact that there are girl groups, boy groups and co-ed groups, there’s always variety in the industry.

Now, while there’s a variety of concepts, there are undoubtedly some that fans love more, one of them being the girl crush concept. Different girl groups have broken into the saturated K-Pop market using this concept, and fans were more than ready to receive them and their music, or more specifically, their empowering lyrics. In this article, we’ll be highlighting 8 K-Pop songs by K-Pop girl groups that have strong and savage lyrics. Every female K-Pop stan— or any fan, really— needs to play at least one of these songs on loop every week.

        1. aespa – ‘Savage’

“Oh my gosh, don’t you know I’m a savage”

Ah, fans definitely remember this iconic line. The beginning of this song alone was already calling all fans to embrace their power and savagery. Savagery in this case is, of course, used to describe someone who is uncontrollable and fierce and goes in their own way. We honestly can’t thank aespa enough for such an iconic line that anyone could see for a little confidence boost.

        2. VIVIZ & Kep1er – ‘Purr’

“Yeah, I’m the sweetest girl, but I can take a bite

‘Cause I’m a lioness, proud independent type”

The moment this dance unit was formed for episode 8 of Mnet's “Queendom 2”, fans were elated because of the potential of the dance line. But then, when this song was released and performed, fans were more focused on another thing— the lyrics. These particular lines, most especially, caught fans’ eyes, and it served as that reminder that you can be nice and still not settle for anything unworthy of yourself.

        3. LE SSERAFIM – ‘Eve, Psyche and The Bluebeard’s wife’

“I’m a mess in distress, but we’re still the best dressed

Fear less, say yes, we don’t dress to impress”

A very recent track, this one, but it has garnered much attention and acceptance from fans already. The idea behind this song and its title further enhances the main concept of LE SSERAFIM: strong, fearless women who are willing to take risks and push boundaries. Fans and non-fans can repeat these lines to themselves whenever they need that fearless energy about them, and of course, you can also wish for what’s forbidden in the process.

        4. EVERGLOW – ‘First’

“You know that I come first

        I’m a winner, winner, winner”

If anyone doesn’t include EVERGLOW in their list of savage girl groups, then what list are they prepping? Not only has EVERGLOW come back again and again with strong, feminine songs that empower, they also fully embody the concept. Take this song, ‘FIRST’ as an example: the chorus alone is enough to have you jumping up your seat and affirming the lyrics in your life. If that doesn’t scream strong and savage, then honestly, we don’t know what does.

        5. BLACKPINK – ‘Tally’

“I say fuck it when I feel it,

‘Cause no one’s keeping tally, I do what I want with who I like”

It’s inevitable that a BLACKPINK song would make this list. They are, after all, the most popular 3rd gen K-Pop girl group with the girl crush concept, following in their 2nd gen sunbae, 2NE1’s footsteps. Now, though this song is a b-side, it still caught fans’ attention with its unapologetically savage lyrics. They tell themselves that they are done trying to cater to other people’s need and will now do as they please, because at the end of the day, no one really cares what they do. Deep lyrics like this which say the most vulnerable things in a strong way are lyrics fans very much appreciate.

        6. LOONA – ‘Paint The Town (PTT)’

“We devilous, 우린 curious, so don’t mess with us”

This entire track was a power anthem, and fans know it. From the composing to the lyrics and choreography, everything about this song screamed, ‘girl power anthem’. This line, sassily sung by JinSoul, was everything fans needed to complete the already powerful chorus.

        7. TWICE – ‘CRY FOR ME’

“I want you to, I want you to, I want you to cry/die for me”

We remember when this song was released and performed on the MAMA 2020 stage, fans were aching for a music video. This track is part of the experimental and more mature side of TWICE’s discography, and they had fans allured by the lyrics. The lyrics, chorus, and especially the lines above had a mesmerising feel to it, making it all the more intoxicating to listen to. Fans definitely needed this sort of concept from TWICE.

        8. PURPLE KISS – ‘Nerdy’

“Okay, I’m nerdy, but I’m not stupid, 어쩔”

PURPLE KISS is a groundbreaking group with much potential for even bigger success. And it’s not just their vocals that we need them to be recognised for— their lyrics and songwriting is also at its peak game. In this track, they let listeners know that they might appear nerdy and weird, but that doesn’t mean they are stupid or clueless. We’re sure a lot of fans can relate to these lyrics. Talk about being relatable and strong at the same time.

        BONUS: XG – ‘SHOOTING STAR’

“Eveything I do, I do it A1 flawless”

It makes perfect to include such a popular and amazing song onto this list, even if the group isn’t necessarily a K-Pop group. XG’s latest comeback has increased their fanbase, and for good reason. Both tracks on the mini-album were bangers, but the stronger and more XG of the two was the title track, ‘SHOOTING STAR’. Most of the lyrics were oozing strong and savage energy, but the line that starts the song has to take the cake, right? It’s a line you could use in your daily morning affirmations, that’s for sure.
