K-Pop moves ever forward and shows no signs of stopping. This is made evident through the success of newer groups like NMIXX, LE SSERAFIM, and TXT. These groups are constantly seen rising to the top of music charts and are considered as some of the new leaders of the current generation.

Although their success is clear for everyone to see, we cannot forget that the genre as a whole has seen a large number of successful artists pass through its doors. K-Pop has a storied history that would take weeks to properly sort through and cover. But here at Kpopmap, we're taking it one month at a time with our series, K-Pop Flashback.

Through this series, we open the gates of nostalgia at the end of every month and take a look at a specific time in K-Pop. We aim to look back no less than 7 years, the average contract length of your typical idol group. Our goals are to both reminisce and introduce newer K-Pop fans to older groups and trends that dominated the market all those years ago.

For the month of April, we are traveling back to the year 2014. Let's meet the artists that dominated the charts!

Although 2014 is just shy of a decade, nine years still feels like a lifetime ago. While searching through both Melon Chart and Circle Chart, the songs and artists that made it to the top were practically identical, with a few changes in the order. The K-Pop artists that dominated the charts in the month of April 2014 included AKMU, Apink, HIGH4, and IU. April 2014 also saw the arrival of the legendary duet between SoYou and Jung GiGo. We were also treated to the heavenly vocals of Park HyoShin, Yoon MinSoo, and Shin YoungJae.

        Top Songs Of April 2014

        AKMU - '200%'

When they first met the public through the second season of SBS' "K-pop Star", AKMU immediately became a national sensation. In under one year after winning the competition, they released their debut album "Play", featuring their title song '200%'. The song is lively and bright, showcasing the two sibling's vibrant energy. The good vibes released from this song were absolutely infectious, making it difficult to not hum along to its addictive melody.

        Apink - 'Mr. Chu'

Even if you are not a Pink Panda (Apink's fandom name), you cannot deny that 'Mr. Chu' had the K-Pop community underneath an unbreakable spell. The song became a reenergizing vitamin to all who listened and deservedly remained at the top of the charts for weeks. From its addictive dance to the girls' enchanting vocals, 'Mr. Chu' was a movement that's not easy to forget.

        Park HyoShin - 'Wild Flower'

Among the bright, vibrancy of K-Pop hits comes this legendary ballad track by Park HyoShin. 'Wild Flower' is breathtaking and emotional, plucking on every heartstring until tears are inevitable. Despite being heartbreakingly sad, the track was shown great love and support that remains even until this very day.

HIGH4, IU - 'Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms'

This collaboration between HIGH4 and IU allowed the feelings of spring to remain embedded in listeners' hearts for weeks to come. Even after all these years, when the cherry blossom seasons begins, 'Not Spring, Love or Cherry Blossoms' takes over the charts. The longevity of this song is incredible, as it has become synonymous with the season of spring.

SoYou x Jung GiGo - 'Some' feat. Geeks' Lil Boi

It's hard to believe that it has already been 9 years since the release of the addictively heartwarming track, 'Some'. This song was simply iconic and the impact it had cannot be ignored. 'Some' gave birth to the slang term of the same name, describing the time between two people right before they officially start dating. Your heart will be fluttering for something, every time you listen to this amazing track.

Yoon MinSoo & Shin YoungJae - 'Fate'

Rounding out the top artists and songs from April 2014 is this breathtaking duet between Yoon MinSoo and Shin YoungJae. The two met on KBS' "Immortal Singer 2" and gave a chilling performance of 'Fate' from the legendary Lee SunHee. Their haunting vocals made you speechless, bringing out feelings of deep sadness and yearning. A box of tissues will definitely come in handy while listening to this song.
