        SM Entertainment / BigHit Music

What is the first thing you notice in a K-Pop group? In most cases, it is usually the name. In an industry where new groups debut every month, if not more frequently, names can make all the difference. They determine a group's memorability, their first impression on an audience, and most importantly, generate interest and curiosity. The name of a group represents their musical identity, purpose, and style, setting them apart from numerous other groups. Naturally therefore, as the group goes on to achieve critical and commercial success, their name becomes a golden standard.

Over the years, one of the most common trends when it comes to naming K-Pop groups has been to use 3-letter names. Here are some K-Pop groups with 3 letter names that became hugely popular!

Note: This list is in no particular order or ranking.

        1. BTS

The biggest K-Pop group in the world, BTS, debuted in 2013 and rose to global fame soon after. BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan, which means bulletproof boy scouts.

        2. EXO

EXO debuted in 2012, giving new life to the Hallyu wave and popularising K-Pop even more. EXO comes from the word "exoplanet", which refers to a planet outside our solar system. This perfectly aligns with their concept of the members being aliens with superpowers who must protect the heart of the tree of life.
