6 Most Enjoyable B-Sides Released By Girl Groups And Female Soloists In Summer 2023

        Marie Claire Korea

This past summer made sure to surprise fans of K-Pop with multiple exciting comebacks. Girl groups and female soloists especially have been quite active in that regard, putting out album after album for the fans to enjoy. Not that we’re complaining… far from it, actually.

We thought some of the albums put out by the women in K-Pop had expertly made b-sides. As we can’t ignore these masterpieces, we’ve decided to let you delightful fans know the 6 b-sides released by girl groups and female soloists in summer 2023 that we found most enjoyable. Some of these b-sides might just implore you to stan these talented female K-Pop artists, that is if you aren’t stanning them already.

        1. TWICE's JiHyo – ‘Talkin’ About It’ ft 24kGoldn

Might we dare say that the appeal of this b-side is due to the fact that it’s sung completely in English? Because while longtime ONCEs might know just how skilled JiHyo is in English, hearing a song of her own this way is quite the achievement. But then, that’s not the only great thing about this b-side. The TWICE vocalist and dancer displays her wide vocal range and her unique vocal colour. Coupled with the song’s addictive beat and 24kGoldn’s joint rap with JiHyo, we believe this is a solid contender for b-side of the year.

        2. Lapillus – ‘Marionette’

There’s just something about an electrified guitar and a simple bas beat that appels to us in this b-side. The Lapillus girls get to showcase their stunning high pitches and give us this rock schoolgirl vibe. We think this b-side is even more enjoyable because of its danceability, where you can groove to the song and still get stuff done. Enjoyable and fun, that’s what Lapillus does in this b-side.

        3. Jeon SoMi – ‘Fxxked Up’

Asides the happy cheers from SOMMUNGCHIs concerning Jeon SoMi’s much awaited return to the music scene, there were also gems on the album that couldn’t be missed. This b-side is one that tells a story similar to her hit title track ‘XOXO’, where her lover abandons her after she ‘gave him her all’. Like SoMi does, she creates a fun atmosphere in the song with experimental and minimal beats, hence enabling her vocals to shine. It’s a must listen, trust us.

        4. STAYC – ‘I Wanna Do’

The STAYC girls once again display their absolutely mesmerising vocal colours in this b-side. We think it goes much too well with the simplified hip-hop beat of the song. Though the girls are no strangers to dishing out some of the most enjoyable b-side tracks in 4th gen K-Pop, this one is an easy favourite. It’s groovy yet again, but also gives the listener the time to appreciate the sweetness of the vocals. We highly rate this b-side.

        5. NewJeans – ‘ASAP’

Again, NewJeans coming with songs that are top tier in their production. This particular b-side is on the shorter side length-wise, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. The girls bring back their unique charms in their vocals through the song, and with the soft beats, it’s easy to listen attentively to the cute lyrics. Now, as NewJeans have said in this track, ‘hurry up, don’t be lazy’ and stream this enjoyable b-side!

        6. Jo YuRi – ‘Hang On’ + ‘Bitter Taste’

If you were or are a Wiz*ONE, it’s no surprise that most of you would have been following Jo YuRi’s career since she made her solo debut in 2021. As a main vocalist she was in IZ*ONE, she had blossomed into a soloist worth her salt. With her latest mini album “LOVE ALL”, she has once again shown her beautiful vocal talents. For ‘Hang On’, the groovy beats makes the song one that’s easy to vibe to, coupled with her soft and alternating high and low pitches.

In ‘Bitter Taste’, there’s more of a quirkiness to the tunes, and the lyrics run on and over each other in the post chorus. We couldn’t choose which was the lore enjoyable between the two, so we put them both. Who knows? You might be more decisive and a favourite.

We know there must be b-sides from various albums by girl groups and female soloists that you’ve loved this past summer. We’d absolutely love to know them via the comments section.
