Korea is expanding its culture worldwide those days. More popular than ever thanks to the hype around K-Pop and K-Dramas, Korea is growing and attracting many people. The Korean wave, also known as Hallyu, has been noticed in many countries such as the U.S., or even some European countries, but what about the rest of the world? Korea had an impact in much more countries than we can imagine, and our Hallyu reporter articles are here to update you about the state of the Korean Wave in many different countries over the globe. One thing is for sure, Korea is making its way over the world by using soft power and sharing its wonderful culture.

Thailand is a country close to Korea, so it is not a surprise that the Korean wave made its way there. But it actually wasn't so widely popular until recently, and the interest Thai people have in Korea is still growing up a bit more each day. May it be through the popularity of K-Pop, K-Drama, or even K-Beauty, Thai people are real fans of Korea in all ways. And because of this huge response to the K-Culture introduction into their country, the opportunities to invite celebrities in Thailand and get Korean products are also growing day by day. I got the chance to travel to Thailand this winter, and I took this opportunity to see how was doing the Korean Wave over there. I was surprised to see so much interest in Korean culture in all aspects.

        1. The Popularity of K-Pop In Thailand

Nowadays, many K-Pop groups are going on tours all over the world, and Thailand is more and more often part of the tour stops. During my time in Thailand, Stray Kids were having their Concert, so I could come across some ads to promote the concert. And seeing the size and location of the ads, it is easy to understand that it is not considered a small event. The ad was about 4 meters long and 2 meters high and located in a popular subway station in the center of Bangkok, a place a lot of people will pass by. So for sure, it was a strategic location to spread the word about the concert, which end up being completely sold out. Some Thai celebrities such as actors also attended the event, proving that Korean groups are pretty popular over there too. There were also some ads for BLACKPINK's concert in Thailand, knowing one of the members is from Thailand, it is not surprising to see support for the group there.

Later during my trip, as I ate at a small restaurant near an entertainment agency, the place's TV was playing a compilation of old SEVENTEEN's stages at "Music Bank". This shows how much K-Pop is popular in Thailand. Not only were they showing old stages of the group, proving that they do not have an interest in recent activities only, but it was a full compilation, showing that they know much about the promotions of a group in Korea, along with the programs hold weekly for groups to promote. In another cafe, I spotted an NCT 127's poster near the counter. Once again, this was proof that K-Pop is one of Korea's cultural fields that is the most popular in Thailand.

Just like Korea has a lot of products sponsored by celebrities, Thailand also has some. As I entered some convenience stores, I came across a special edition of Oreos, the BLACKPINK Oreos. To be honest, I did not have a try, but there were two types of Oreos to match the group's colors: Black, and Pink. Along with the Oreo, I could also find some toothpaste BLACKPINK's Lisa made the promotion. And the most famous phone service is also using GOT7's BamBam as a promotor for their brand, showing once again that Thailand is relying a lot on the popularity of K-Pop.

        2. Korean Products Found In Thailand

Of course, during the trip, I ended up doing some shopping at one of the biggest shopping malls in Thailand. And I was quite surprised by all the Korea and K-Pop-related items I could find. Starting with the whole YG Place. An entire mini-shop dedicated to YG's artists' goodies and merchandise. There were clothes, plushies, furniture and more, just like a shop I would find in Korea.

Another floor that was dedicated to plushies had a whole stock of BT21 plushies. They had at least one plushie of each character, including Van. I was quite surprised that the stock was so full and they even had the big pillows too.

On another floor, there was a big bookstore, and like every bookstore, there was also a magazine section. There, I found many magazines Korean celebs made the cover of, such as Marie Claire with Park SeoJoon, or GQ with Park JiHoon. Of course, there was a lot more. And in the language section, there were many books to learn Korean too, showing that the interest in Korea is strong enough for some people to learn the language too.

        3. The Inspiration From Korea For Artists, Events, And Ads

It is still rare to see this kind of event outside of Asia, but especially in Korea, the anniversary events are put to another level. May it be an ad screen rented for a few days or a cafe rented to host special events, fans know how to support their idols on their birthday. Thai fans took inspiration from this and started doing so too recently, hosting events for Thai artists, and especially actors, who are among the most famous celebrities in Thailand. More than cafe events, I got to see some other kinds of ads at a back of a Tuk-tuk. Tuk-tuks are often used by locals when they have to do small travels, so having an ad at the back of it is also a good way to promote the artist on the ad. Since Korea does not have Tuk-tuk it is usually placed on the top of taxis, this was just the Thai version of it.

Nowadays, a lot of artists in Thailand are also getting inspiration from Korean artists and are doing a lot of vocal and dance covers, showing that K-Pop is a big part of the entertainment industry, even in Thailand. Many Thai artists have started to do fan meetings, even in Korea, and it is not rare to see them perform Korean songs. This only shows the love Thai people have for K-Pop and how much it is an inspiration for them. Some new artists in Thailand also follow the step of K-Pop groups by creating innovative dances to perform and producing high-quality MVs that displays the members' stunning visuals as well.

        4. The Influence Of K-Beauty And Korean Beauty Standards

Korea is known for its beauty and aesthetic culture as well. Many people come to Korea especially for buying or receiving beauty treatments, or getting plastic surgery. Of course, it has a cost and cannot be accessed by all, but many celebrities are influenced by Korea and allow themselves to get much plastic surgery to reassemble Koreans. Some celebrities are even getting sessions to lighten their skin color to fit Korean beauty standards. It is really surprising to see how much Korean trends can spread all the way to other countries. But apart from the surgeries and big treatments, regular Korean beauty products are accessible in some malls. For example, in a place I visited, I found a whole shelf dedicated to Etude House products. Of course, one shelf isn't a lot, but little by little, the K-Beauty culture is also spreading, and soon, I believe more brands will be seen in Thailand.

Overall, we can say that the Hallyu is spreading like fire over Thailand, and Korea became a big inspiration for Thai people and even some artists who try to follow the steps of Korean celebs.
