The Hallyu wave has steadily been growing larger and larger, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. K-Pop fans have been popping up at every corner of the globe, showing the genre's massive reach and appeal. Now, songs by our beloved idols have started to pop up on local airwaves, causing fans to rejoice on being able to hear their favorite group on radio stations in their home country.

So it should come as no surprise that Hawaii, the melting pot of the Pacific, is home to a large number of K-Pop fans that only seems to increase by the day. Although not a major stopping point for concerts, the likes of Wonder Girls, BIGBANG, Jay Park, and Epik High have performed on the islands at one point in time.

The venues were far from the size of World Cup stadiums, but fans would still come out in full force and show their favorite groups the Aloha spirit. With the globalization of K-Pop, Hawaii residents patiently wait for even more groups to announce a stop in the beautiful islands. But in the meantime, they must find other ways to express their love for Hallyu.

        No Concerts, No Problem

While concerts are a big part of the K-Pop experience, fans living in Hawaii have found a way around it — or in this case, the lack of them. Even before the global rise of K-Pop, there were various restaurants that specialized in Korean cuisine, allowing fans to have a taste of their bias' favorite dishes. From ddeokbokki (spicy rice cake) to mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in a chilled broth), the food choices are endless for Hawaii residents.

Along with restaurants, K-Pop fans in Hawaii also have a number of stores where they can purchase various merchandise, free of the insane shipping costs. At stores such as Pink Box and N. Cat, fans can buy anything from newly released albums to photocards of their bias. Entering these stores bring a rush of excitement and a sense of belonging to fans all across the islands. Although food and being able to buy merchandise could suffice, many looked for more ways to connect with the local K-Pop community.

The Rise of Cup Sleeve Events

Concerts and Hawaii's annual Korean Festival are but one way to bring K-Pop fans together — but they are not the only way! In recent years, fans started to organize various events that brought out crowds of K-Pop enthusiasts from all across the islands. Namely, cup sleeve events. These events are usually held at bubble tea cafes at varying locations.

The attendees have the opportunity to purchase delicious drinks and receive a specially made cup sleeve for the occasion. Local small businesses also come out and bring with them stocks of K-Pop themed merchandise. This can range anywhere from cute stickers, lovely photocards, and even handcrafted goods such as mugs and tote bags.

The main purpose of these cup sleeve events is to celebrate an idol's birthday. This allows fans to come together to outwardly show love and appreciation for their bias being born. Organizers set up areas in the cafe dedicated to showing off the idol, using a wide array of photos, albums, and associated items.

While a majority of these events have been held for BTS members, different fandoms have begun organizing cup sleeve events for other artists, too. Hawaii might be a small string of islands, but the love K-Pop fans have for their favorite artists is just as big as the larger states. Hopefully their passion can be felt and more artists will decide to make a stop at the islands of Hawaii.
