K-Pop is ever changing and shows no signs of slowing down. With the rise of the fourth generation, we see groups like TXT and NewJeans dominating the music charts. They, among others, have started to reach the forefront of the K-Pop industry, representing the distinct qualities of what makes the current generation unique.
Although their success is clear for everyone to see, we cannot forget that the genre as a whole has seen a large number of successful artists pass through its doors. K-Pop has a storied history that would take weeks to properly sort through and cover. But here at Kpopmap, we're taking it one month at a time with our series, K-Pop Flashback.
Through this series, we open the gates of nostalgia at the end of every month and take a look at a specific time in K-Pop. We aim to look back no less than 7 years, the average contract length of your typical idol group. Our goals are to both reminisce and introduce newer K-Pop fans to older groups and trends that dominated the market all those years ago.

With 2012 being just over a decade ago, looking back there are many iconic tracks that provide constant waves of nostalgia. Searching through both Melon Chart and Circle Chart, the songs and artists that made it to the top of the list were practically identical, with a few differences in the order. The K-Pop artists that dominated the charts in the month of May 2012 includes Girls' Generation TTS and SISTAR. The charts also saw artists like Busker Busker, Baek ZYoung, IU, and J.Y. Park make it onto the list.

At this point, Girls' Generation already established themselves as a legendary girl group. When it was announced that they would be coming out with a subunit, fans were absolutely ecstatic. SISTAR - 'Alone'
There are certain artists that represent a particular season. Whether it's their vibrant discography or overall vibe, these K-Pop idols match the season the best. With May coming to a close and summer creeping ever closer, there's one K-Pop girl group that have been the queens of summer for a very long time. That group is none other than SISTAR. 'Alone' had a bit of a subdued energy, but still provided fans with an electrifying excitement, perfect for the summer months. From concept to choreography, K-Pop fans everywhere were raving about SISTAR's iconic 'Alone'.
Baek ZYoung - 'Voice'
Even with the popularity of dance and pop tracks, there's a certain allure to Baek ZYoung's emotional ballads that lodge itself right in the center of your heart. Her powerful vocals take hold of you from the very first second. Then, you'll find yourself knocked off your feet by her immaculate high notes. With her skill, it's no wonder she made it to the top of music charts in May 2012.
Busker Busker - 'Cherry Bossom Ending'
Just as SISTAR are the queens of summer, Busker Busker is an artist that's closely related to the vibrancy of spring. This is most especially true with their song 'Cherry Blossom Ending'. It's a legendary song that rises up in the charts whenever it's time to transition from spring to summer. It's light acoustic melody will make you feel like you're floating through a daydream that you will wish could last forever.
IU - 'Every End Of The Day'
IU is an incredible singer-songwriter who has steadily solidified herself as one of the best musicians in the country. Every song she releases is iconic and 'Every End Of The Day' is no different! It's a lighthearted track that puts a spring in your step the moment you press play. It's playful and fun, everything you would want from a song at the tail end of spring.
J.Y. Park - 'You're The One'
J.Y. Park is a living legend that has constantly withstood the test of time. He's a talented producer that has written amazing songs for both himself and the artists within his company. 'You're The One' is a fun, groovy dance track that gets you moving the more you listen. Older K-Pop fans will definitely be hit by a wave of nostalgia while listening to this feel good track.
