        "Fantasy Boys" Official

With already a month into its run, MBC’s “Fantasy Boys” is ramping up to be one of the most mesmerizing survival competition programs of 2023. The contestants have put on spectacular performances, with each one getting better than the last. There’s no doubt that the idol hopefuls have the passion and drive to reach the very top.

Each week, we get to see everything from new performances to behind the scenes chemistry between our favorite trainees. Episode 5 was no different as it once again put the idol hopefuls face to face with yet another challenge.

Here’s a recap of what happened last week on MBC’s “Fantasy Boys”.

        Warning: this article contains spoilers.

        1. Semester 2 Rankings

The survival show picked up right where it left with the announcement of Kim DaeHui at no. 35. As more names were called and while the boys began to take their seat on stage, the remaining contestants understandably became tense with nervous anticipation.

When the show reached the top 12, audiences and contestants alike were very much surprised at how the standings changed between just two semesters.

We have a full article on Semester 2’s top 12 that you can check out down below.

In the end, Hong SungMin was announced as no. 1, with Yu JunWon following at no. 2, and Hikari at no. 3.

Once the top 12 was fully announced, “Fantasy Boys” shifted viewers’ attention on who would take the coveted last seat at no. 37. After some nerve-wracking build up, Song DuHyun’s name was called, much to the relief of him, his fans, and his fellow contestants.

However, the ranking did not end there, as 2PM’s WooYoung was allowed to save one more trainee from elimination. After much thought, WooYoung decided to save Park HyeongGeun, providing him with an opportunity to prove himself in Semester 3.

        2. Semester 3 Mission Reveal

The episode quickly transitions to the next stage of the competition: Semester 3. With Semester 3 comes another mission, along with a new set of challenges and hurdles for the contestants to face.

After gathering together in an auditorium, "Fantasy Boys" producer, JinYoung, arrives to dish out the details for Semester 3. He reveals that the contestants will now be facing a Specialty Major mission in which the boys will have to choose between rap, vocals, or dance position in order to form one team.

Depending on the role that they choose, they are tasked with different things. Rappers must show off their skills through their very own rap-making. Vocalists are in charge of vocals and ad-libs. Then dancers will perform a dance break. The songs available for contestants to choose from include BTS' 'I Need U', EXO's 'Monster', WINNER's 'Really Really', Stray Kids' 'MIROH', and MONSTA X's 'Shoot Out'.

        3. Mission Song Selection

It was revealed that prior to coming to the auditorium, the boys had participated in a morning match to determine the best trainees in their position. The winning contestants included Moon HyunBin for dance, Hikaru for vocals, and Seo SangWoo for rap. Due to their victory, they were able to choose their preferred mission song.

While most survival competition programs would go by ranking, "Fantasy Boys" pulls a surprising twist. Instead, the contestants would be leaving it all up to chance, as JinYoung pulls random names out of a box. However, the selection process does not end once all the spots are filled, rather, remaining contestants receive the chance to enter into the group through a 1 vs 1 battle.

Watching the video above, you can just feel the tense and nerve-wracking atmosphere during the battle portions, all while being wildly entertaining to watch too. The contestants show off their skills and try to convince the other song members to accept them onto the team. Some rely on their talent, some on their hilarious wit, and others use a combination of the two. Although all seats were filled in the end, it certainly was not easy getting to this point.

        4. Start Of A New Semester

Episode 5 ends with the appearance of special MC, SHINee's MinHo and a small appetizer of what's to come. "Fantasy Boys" shows us a quick snippet of the 'Really Really' team. While there wasn't enough time to show the entire performance, the boys looked confident and ready to set the stage on fire with their endless charms.

Look out for the next episode of MBC's "Fantasy Boys", which airs every Friday at 10PM KST.
