        1. Picaresque Revenge - An Unusual Genre

3 Compelling Reasons To Watch Chaotic New K-Drama "The Escape Of The Seven" A.K.A "7 Escape"

        SBS

The picaresque genre, originating in 16th-century Spain, features roguish anti-hero protagonists navigating corrupt societies through episodic adventures. These narratives often employ humor and satire to critique social injustices, using a first-person perspective to recount morally ambiguous actions. The protagonists often resort to cunning, deception, and trickery to survive and prosper in a corrupt or unjust society. This genre's hallmark is its exploration of the complexities of human behavior and society, which is exactly what "The Escape Of The Seven" is getting at.

"The Escape Of The Seven" combines picaresque with revenge thriller and creates a unique blend that is inherently makjang. The story revolves around Bang DaMi - an innocent high school girl who gets tangled in a web of lies, deceit and desires that destroys her adoptive family and all that she has ever held dear. From a fake teen pregnancy to a sensationalized false "affair" with her adoptive father, Bang DaMi is cornered with no escape. Our evil antagonists, who all had a hand in this destruction, may be the main characters of the story, but they are ultimately set for retribution and doomed to hellish punishment. Now, it will be refreshing to see how they get to that point.

        2. Top Stars Play Treacherous Villains

Much like "Penthouse", "The Escape Of The Seven" has also cast top actors as well as rising stars as villains. This includes Hwang JungEum as Geum LaHui - an abusive mother who abandoned her child Bang DaMi (Jung LaEl) and later used her to win a battle for inheritance, Lee YuBi as Han MoNe - a manipulative wannabe superstar who ruins Bang DaMi's life, Lee Joon as Min DoHyuk - a gangster who unwittingly makes things more difficult for Bang DaMi due to a misunderstanding, Shin EunKyung as Cha JuRan, who prepares a false pregnancy report for Bang DaMi to make her rich grandfather disown her, Yoon JongHoon as Yang JinMo - a wicked entertainment company CEO who fabricates a false story about Bang DaMi to defame her, Jo YoonHee as Go MyungJi - DaMi's homeroom teacher who lies about witnessing DaMi giving birth, and Jo JaeYun as Nam CheolWoo - a corrupt police officer who frames DaMi's father for her murder, among others. The drama also stars Um KiJoon, but his character has not been introduced yet.

The transformation of these fantastic, talented actors into sinister, evil, twisted villains is not only impressive but also utterly satisfying for viewers. The cast proves their mettle every time they leave us infuriated by the actions of their characters, and needless to say, their versatility is on full display.

        3. A Real Survival Game

"The Escape Of The Seven" is said to be a "War For Survival". Beyond the metaphorical meaning of this phrase, it also hints at an actual survival game that our antagonists may be thrust into, echoing divine punishment. This time, revenge is poised to unfold in all its blood-soaked brutality. If the teasers and trailers are anything to go by, we might be getting something reminiscent of "Squid Game", where our villains must fight unfathomable nightmares on a "cursed island" and deceive each other to live. The entertainment meter is about to break!
