One of the most highly anticipated K-Dramas of 2023, "See You In My 19th Life", ended its fantastic run yesterday with its beautiful last episode. The finale revolved around the full story behind the first life of Ban JiEum (Shin HaeSun) and her connection with both Moon SeoHa (Ahn BoHyun) and Kang MinGi (Lee ChaeMin). The central action of this arc happens atop a bridge with fireworks going off around them over a lake. This festival in "See You In My 19th Life" is the Haman Nakhwa Nori - a centuries-old, immensely popular festival and cultural asset of South Korea.

        Spoiler Alert!

As the fireworks go off, Su (the name with which Ban JiEum was born in her first life) vows to remember CheonUn's cruelty forever and get revenge on him, even if it takes her several rebirths across hundreds and thousands of years. As such, it was Su herself who cursed her future reincarnations with remembering their past lives. The tragic impact of the scene was amplified manifold by the fireworks, creating an unforgettable scene colored with pain.

If you'd like to watch this festival yourself, keep reading for more details!

The Haman Nakhwa Nori festival dates back to the Joseon Dynasty, which is what makes it possible to be featured in "See You In My 19th Life" as a part of Ban JiEum's first life. Interestingly, it also appears in the historical K-Drama "Bloody Heart", the horror K-Drama "Revenant", BTS' RM's music video for 'Wild Flower (with youjeen)' and was even introduced in "2 Days & 1 Night".

The festival is held in Haman County every year in May on Buddha's birthday to pray for the well-being of its people. It is a completely free festival that anyone can be a part of. The celebration includes the iconic firework display called "cheonyeondae" that you see in the drama, followed by Korean traditional music and dance performances by renowned artists.

For the firework display, "Nakhwa", which roughly translates to "falling flowers" or "falling flames", made of charcoal powder from camphor trees, is hung between bamboo poles and ignited, creating fireworks that float like flower petals on the water. During the Japanese colonial period, the festival was suspended due to oppressive policies, but it was restored in 1985, and since then, it has been celebrated annually.
