The K-Pop industry has stepped into a new era of the metaverse, and it is well on its way to becoming a pioneer of the same in the global entertainment industry. While K-Pop groups like aespa popularized the model of virtual reality, Superkind took it a step further with the inclusion of a virtual idol in its lineup. Now, it's time to up the ante and give in to the wonders of VR with a survival reality show featuring virtual idols. Leading this brand-new movement is Kakao, with the launch of a competition show that aims to debut a girl group made entirely of virtual K-Pop idols. This is "GIRL'S RE:VERSE".

Set in a metaverse called "W", "GIRL'S RE:VERSE" will introduce 30 contestants who will play their corresponding virtual reality characters throughout the competition. Their personalities will be reflected partly in their characters, who have their own individual backstories, and their talents will be showcased through the same with motion capture technology. However, their real identities will be hidden until the end unless a contestant gets eliminated. In that case, just like the popular singing competition show "King of Mask Singer", the eliminated contestant will reveal their identity. The catch is that these contestants are not non-celebrities or trainees but rather real-life girl group members, which naturally hypes up the guessing game. Winners will be determined through a "Produce 101" style survival tournament, with viewers' votes taking up major importance.

Introductions of the characters with fun segments such as balance games have been uploaded on the GIRL'S RE:VERSE YouTube channel. You can also go to their Instagram page to get to know them more.
"GIRL'S RE:VERSE" will be hosted by Aiki of "Street Woman Fighter" fame, legendary idol BADA from S.E.S, Pengsoo, and Boom, all of whom will have their own virtual characters. The show is slated for premiere on November 28, 2022, and will be available for streaming through both Kakaopage and YouTube for international viewers.
Not only will "GIRL'S RE:VERSE" give idols an opportunity to shine solely through their talents, charms, and ability to conjure up a relatable character, but it will also set a precedent for virtual idols to come. With the popularity of vocaloid performers like Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, Megurine Luka, MEIKO, and KAITO, it is only a matter of time before virtual K-Pop idols take over the world and "GIRL'S RE:VERSE" might just be the first step towards that future.
