To get to know more about this wonderful artist, let's get into our interview with Kang MinHyuk!

Your acting career is now in its 13th year. You were a student in a school uniform in "The Heirs" 10 years ago, and in your new movie "Havana", you are a professional lawyer in a suit. It must be a new feeling. How do you feel looking back on the past 10 years of your acting career?

I am grateful that I have been able to continue acting, and looking back on the past 10 years, I am excited and looking forward to the next 10 years.

Truly, Kang MinHyuk's decade-long acting career evokes even more excitement for the next decade as he explores new avenues, proving his versatility as an actor. Kang MinHyuk's role as Cha SeGwang in "My Husband Got A Family" won him the "Rising Star Award" at the APAN Star Awards in 2012, presenting him as a fresh face to look out for and in the following year, the immense popularity of "The Heirs" and of his character Yoon ChanYoung, in particular, turned him into a world star. Back in his home country, this drama earned him the "New Star Award" at the 2013 SBS Drama Awards, and soon, Kang MinHyuk was on everyone's K-Radar.

One would think that you might have been nervous when you first stepped onto a drama set while promoting as an idol. Compared to your feelings at the time of your acting debut, you are now a confident veteran actor. What are the significant ways in which you'd say you have grown and changed?

Anything new requires adaptation. Of course, it was awkward, difficult, and scary at first. I think experience is important in anything. The biggest thing you have to do is find a better and more developed version of yourself based on that experience. I think I have grown a lot by realizing this.

The refined finesse that only comes with experience is precisely what shines through in Kang MinHyuk's recent projects, captivating audiences worldwide. It is no surprise, therefore, that the actor's popularity has grown by leaps and bounds, most visibly on social media.

Kang MinHyuk in "Celebrity" on Netflix

Your character of a “Princess Maker” chaebol from your previous work, "Celebrity," still seems to have a strong presence. The romantic image has left a deep impression on overseas fans, who perceive Han JunKyung as a charming prince. With the show streaming on Netflix, you’ve garnered even more international fans. This boost is also translating to your Instagram followers, which has grown exponentially. Are you feeling this popularity? How is the life of a real influencer?

I'm just thankful for the positive reception. I thought about how I could express the coolness of Han JunKyung and the coolness of a chaebol in a different way. Of course, I had many discussions with the Writer and Director. After "Celebrity" aired, my followers increased significantly. It made me realize that, just like in the drama, we are living in such a life. However, I believe real influencers may prioritize what they show to others, so I try not to cross that boundary and always make an effort not to miss out on things that may be more important in real life.

If Han JunKyung's coolness was dream-like and dazzling, his latest character, Lee JeongMin, from the film "Havana" has a dignified and composed coolness laced with gravitas. This new side of actor Kang MinHyuk is not only refreshing but also raises expectations for his future as an actor even more.

        "Havana" Movie

In your previous works, you often portrayed wealthy chaebol heirs, but in your latest film "Havana", you play the role of a completely different tone - a calm and intellectual lawyer. What motivated you to choose this film, and were there any specific aspects of this project that you were strongly drawn to?

I always prioritize the script first. If the script is well-written and paints a vivid picture in my mind as I read it, the character naturally comes to life. In the case of "Havana", I was particularly drawn to it because I felt that in order to effectively convey the message embedded in the script, the role of a lawyer would be crucial.

For those who might not know, "Havana" is an electrifying crime thriller and courtroom drama that follows the journey of JeongMin, a spirited rookie public attorney portrayed by the talented Kang MinHyuk. His world is turned upside down when he takes on a perplexing case, defending the enigmatic YoonAh, brought to life by the captivating Yoo DaIn. YoonAh is accused of the chilling murder of her husband by sealing his mouth and nose with glue, earning the grim moniker of the "Bond Murder Case."

In a whirlwind of conflicting evidence and shifting testimonies, JeongMin remains steadfast in his belief in YoonAh's innocence. Yet, as she oscillates between confession and denial, the case becomes a labyrinth of uncertainty. Undeterred, JeongMin is driven by an unyielding determination to unearth the truth, no matter how convoluted the path to justice may be. You can check out the trailer for the film below!

Kang MinHyuk received rave reviews for his splendid acting in "Havana", proving his mettle as an experienced actor. His dedication to his craft is evident in his performance, as he brings a level of realism and authenticity to the role of a lawyer that is both impressive and convincing.

Thanks to powerful performances by the cast, riveting plot, and impeccable pacing, "Havana" won the "Indie Spirit Best Story Line Award" at the Boston International Film Festival 2023 and was screened at the 53rd International Film Festival of India (2022), the Bengaluru International Film Festival (2023) and the Jeonju International Film Festival (2022). If you're still wondering why you should check it out, let's hear from the actor himself!

The Director of “Havana", Hong YongHo, is known to be a former lawyer with 20 years of experience in the legal field, and his previous works have also been in the legal genre. When compared to other films and dramas that have dealt with legal themes, what sets this film apart, according to you? Additionally, could you introduce the key points for viewers to appreciate?

This film contains a much more realistic portrayal of courtroom proceedings that closely resembles what we might experience in real life, compared to previous legal films and dramas. It offers a calm yet weighty story with a dramatic twist.

What are some of the things you did to research for your character and add details to your performance in the role of a lawyer, which you are playing for the first time? Moreover, since you are playing a lawyer, there must have been parts where you had to memorize legal jargon, especially with your long and difficult dialogues. Could you tell us more about that?

I actually went to the courtroom to see how it works, and I also talked to practicing lawyers, including the Director. Of course, the long lines were burdensome, but I tried to figure out the case and acted as if I was actually working as a lawyer.

What do you think are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the main character, Lee JeongMin, in “Havana”?

I think one of his biggest strengths is his youthfulness, vigor, and unwavering determination to stay true to the path he has walked without doubt. As for weaknesses, despite his strengths, he might be susceptible to emotions and vulnerable in matters of the heart or show moments of weakness in interpersonal relationships.

As multifaceted as the character of JeongMin is, the effort that went into bringing this character to life from the script to the screen deserves endless appreciation and respect too. It certainly makes us curious about the extensive creative process, both on and off-camera, and how Lee JeongMin affected Kang MinHyuk or vice-versa.

        "Havana" Movie

Through your portrayal, the character Lee JeongMin seemed to effectively embody both the cold judgment required as a lawyer and the enthusiasm of a passionate rookie lawyer full of empathy. Compared to JeongMin, how do you navigate challenging situations in your daily life?

I believe the aspect of making rational judgments is quite similar. In difficult situations, I think the constant self-reflection and struggle to make the best choice are similar in both the character and my real-life approach.

The movie "Havana" received high praise due to the strong immersion created by the talented cast and its compelling storyline. What efforts did you make during the filming period to immerse yourself in the role of Lee JeongMin, and were there any aspects that were particularly helpful?

I received a lot of help from the Director and lawyers in my personal network. Of course, discussions and support from fellow actors also played a significant role.

Have there been instances where your immersion in the character continued even after the cameras stopped rolling? If so, how do you typically handle such situations?

If I'm immersed in a work, and the emotions linger, even after the cut, I tend to act out the same scene again because the heightened emotions have opened up once.

While working on "Havana", were there any particularly challenging aspects you faced, and is there a message you would like to convey to the audience through this film?

I think one of the most challenging aspects was managing my mindset, especially when there wasn't much time on the set, so I felt rushed while acting. I hope the audience will think about what they truly want to protect while watching the movie.

With yet another well-received and critically acclaimed masterpiece added to his filmography, we cannot wait to see what the actor has in store for us next. Throughout your acting career, you've played various roles. How does it feel to portray different characters each time, and how does it affect your real-life self?

Playing different roles in new scenarios always feels refreshing. Living and expressing a character within the world set by the script is always an intriguing and enjoyable element in my life as Kang MinHyuk.

As someone who has persevered and excelled in both the acting and singing realms in the entertainment industry for such a long time, it couldn't have been easy. From impactful supporting roles to iconic lead roles and transitioning from a young idol to becoming a full-fledged artist in the music industry, if you were to send a congratulatory message to yourself for your efforts and growth over the years, what would you say?

I want to say thank you to myself for coming this far healthy, even though there were times when I was shaken and had a hard time. I also want to thank the people who have been with me all this time because I think I could come this far because of them.
