Summary: It tells the story of a King with two opposite personalities and an assassin girl who wants to kill him but ends up falling in love with him.

Why Watch: The drama portrays a story of passionate romance and nail-biting suspense. It treads this line masterfully with an incredible performance from Park JiHoon and Hong YeJi.

This drama is based on the webtoon, "Love Song For Illusion".

 

2. "Flower That Blooms At Night"

When: January 12

Cast: Honey Lee, Lee JongWon

Summary: It is a comedy investigative historical drama that follows the story of a 15-year-long widow who is the daughter of a noble family and does not see anything of the outside world during the day, but crosses the fence at night to live a secret life.

Why watch: A mix of lightheartedness and mystery, "Flower That Blooms At Night" is a drama that will have you invested while smiling from ear to ear.

 

3. "Sejak: Charmed Deceit"

When: January 21

Cast: Cho JungSeok, Shin SaeKyeong

Summary: Depicts the cruel love story between King YiIn, who must face multiple dangers of power struggles, and Kang HeeSoo, who attempts to seduce the King in the name of revenge, but ends up falling for his charms instead.

Why Watch: A tale of romance and deceit, this drama is filled with various twists and turns that will keep audiences glued to their seats with every passing week.

 

4. "Tale Of Mrs. Ok"

Summary: Depicts the life of a female slave in the Joseon Dynasty and her passionate survival story.

6. "Queen Woo"

In a world where many Western television series welcome multiple seasons, K-Dramas are often wrapped up in at least 16 episodes, sometimes even more. And while daily dramas often sit at the cusp of 40+ episodes, they never crest over one singular season.

The Korean film industry followed this model for a long time, however, in recent years, the landscape of K-Dramas has greatly evolved with the roaring tide of the Hallyu wave. Following the globalization of Korean entertainment, production companies and film crews are starting to take a new approach, splitting one K-Drama into two different parts.

Now, before we explore the success of this new approach, let’s take a look at the evolution of the typical K-Drama.

 

One Story, One Season

There is no doubt that the main allure of K-Dramas is the fact that many end within one season. Working with this model for so long, film crews, writers, and directors understand what it takes to create a compelling K-Drama that audiences will love.

Within the first few episodes, they introduce the main characters, the core focus of the plot, and the looming obstacle that stands in the main characters’ way. Then over the course of the series, there’s internal struggles, a multitude of disagreements, and at times, heart-fluttering romance in between. But regardless of how many things happen over the course of a drama, viewers know that by the final episode, most, if not all, questions will be answered and any loose ends will be promptly tied up.

This tried and true formula has led dramas like “My Love From The Star”, “Secret Garden”, and “Coffee Prince” become shining examples of what a classic K-Drama should be. Many viewers will fondly remember committing 16+ hours of their time to these dramas without a second thought.

 

Multiple Seasons Approach

Although a majority of K-Dramas continued forward with its usual format, there has been a recent rise in multiple season shows. Some of these include “Uncanny Counter”, “The Penthouse: War In Life”, and “Taxi Driver”.

Despite not having a definitive end, these shows reached mass success from the public both locally and abroad, and as a result, fans were more than happy to hear of their renewal. These dramas kept viewers at the edge of their seats and by the time the final credits rolled, they were understandably asking for more.

Now, not all successful dramas end up having a second season, as highlighted by the many years of K-Drama history. But the ones that do usually receive thunderous applause from viewers that makes it difficult to not have a second, or even third, season.

Despite their obvious success, not everyone is on board for these changes. On forum sites like Reddit, many argue that multiple seasons take away the initial appeal K-Dramas had in the first place and the risk of leaving behind too many unanswered questions due to cancellations or other issues. While this might be true for some, many multiple season dramas are still able to properly close the door on the series, allowing fans to move onto the next big thing.

 

The Rise Of A New K-Drama Model

Seasons aside, there seems to be a new K-Drama model coming to light: one story, split into two parts.

This can be seen through the highly successful Netflix-produced “The Glory” and TVING’s “Death Game”. These shows contain the typical flow of the classic K-Drama model, however, the main difference is that they are split into two separate parts. In the case of “The Glory”, the first 8 episodes were released on December 30, 2022, while the final 8 were released on March 10.

Now, with a number of shows split up into two separate parts, there’s more shocking cliffhangers, more mysteries waiting to unfold, and more time to ruminate and fully digest the events of a drama. And while the wait between the first and second part isn’t nearly as long as a K-Drama with multiple seasons, a bit of patience is required to fully appreciate the entirety of a drama.

Of course, dedicated fans in addition to a great storyline will keep viewers excitedly waiting for part 2, and ultimately the conclusion of the drama, however, for more casual viewers, this might cause them to lose interest and move onto something else.

This newer model of K-Dramas will not please everyone, but it seems like it’s growing in popularity as more shows adopt its structure. Now comes the question: will it work? Outside of "The Glory", looking at the success of shows like "Island", "Duty After School", and etc., K-Dramas split into two separate parts continue to retain a majority of their viewers. However, there is the danger of waiting too long or going up against a surging series with high viewership. If these conditions are met, this might mark a significant fall in viewership compared to the first part of the series.

But as seen from these previous works, the right story, cast, and amount of hype make it possible to create a drama that many people will love and continue to support worldwide. In the end, this newer model of dramas is establishing a firm foothold in the scene, and there's no doubt we will see more of it.

1. "Duty After School" / Release Date: March 31, 2023

Studio Dragon has adapted the thriller webtoon "Duty After School" (in Korean "방과 후 전쟁활동", literal translation "After School War Activities") by Ha IlKwon into a web drama. It tells the story of students of the country about to pass the CSAT who have been conscripted to fight an unidentified object for extra points.

PD Sung YongIl ("Class of Lies") and writer Lee NamKyu ("The Light In Your Eyes") was in charge of the production of the webdrama. Shin HyunSoo, Hwang SeIn, Ahn DoKyu, Kim SuGyeom, Kwon EunBin, and more are part of the cast. It is a TVING original.

2. "Moving" / Release Date: August 9, 2023

The supernatural webtoon "Moving" (in Korean "무빙") by Kang Full was adapted into a drama. A supernatural story about high school students and their parents who keep secrets that others don't know.

The director Mo WanIl ("Misty" and "The World of the Married") was in charge of the production of the drama. Zo InSung, Han HyoJoo and Cha TaeHyun are part of the cast in this Disney+ drama.

3. "Bloodhounds" / Release Date: June 9, 2023

The thriller webtoon "Hunting Dogs" (in Korean "사냥개들") by JungChan was adapted into the drama "Bloodhounds." It tells the story of three men who got entangled with each other due to debt and their attempt to get out of it.

It is a Netflix Original drama with 8 episodes. Director Kim JuHwan (movies "Midnight Runners", "The Divine Fury") was in charge of the adaptation. Woo DoHwan, Lee SangYi, Park SungWoong, and Jung DaEun are part of the cast.

4. "Black Knight" / Release Date: May 12, 2023

The webtoon "Delivery Knight" (in Korean "택배기사") by Lee YungYun was adapted into the Netflix drama "Black Knight". The story takes place in a dystopian future where the air pollution has become so serious that people only live out of delivery.

The webtoon "Mask Girl" (in Korean "마스크걸") by MaeMi and HuiSe was adapted into a Netflix drama. It tells the story of Kim MoMi who has a great body but an unattractive face. She dreamed of becoming a celebrity, but she gave up because of her face. She lives as an office worker during the day and is the 'BJ Mask Girl" at night.

Ahn JaeHong, Ko HyunJung, NaNa, and Yeom HyeRan are the lead actors of this Netflix drama.

The webtoon "Joseon Lawyer" (in Korean "조선변호사") by Sim Gun and Writer Jeong was adapted into a drama. It is a refreshing and heartwarming story about Kang HanSu, a lawyer who plans lawsuits and even takes advantages of the feelings of wronged victims. Due to unintended events, he becomes revered as the people's "solver" and hero, which causes him to really grow into a just lawyer.

13. "A Shoulder to Cry On" / Release Date: March 15, 2023

The BL webtoon "A Shoulder to Cry On" (in Korean "소년을위로해줘") by DongMul was adapted into a drama. Here is the summary: Due to TaeHyun's joke, DaYeol gets falsely accused of scandalously attacking him. Among the archers, DaYeol's athletic path is in danger. DaYeol asks TaeHyun to explain the truth; however, he discovers that he is getting swayed by him.

OMEGA X's JaeHan and YeChan are casted for the drama. The drama was planned to air in 2022 but finally was aired in 2023.

14. "Death's Game" / Release Date: December 15, 2023

The webtoon "Death's Game" (in Korean: "이제 곧 죽습니다") by Lee WonSik and Ggulchan was adapted into a drama. The story revolves around YiJae Choi, a 31-year old job seeker who couldn't find a job for 5 years after graduating from college. His ex-girlfriend, who he dated for 6 years, will be marrying another man 3 months after breaking up with him. YiJae commits suicide by jumping off a building, and experiences a reincarnation.

15. “Moon In The Day” / Release Date: November 1, 2023

The webtoon “Moon In The Day” (in Korean "낮에 뜨는 달") has been announced to be adapted in a drama back in 2018 and finally aired in 2023. It is a story about a man whose time has stopped and a woman who is passing through past and present. It is not a simple love story but a ‘romance thriller’.

16. "A Good Day To Be a Dog" / Release Date: October 11, 2023

The romance fantasy webtoon "A Good Day To Be a Dog" also called "Lovely Again Today" (in Korean "오늘도 사랑스럽개") was adapted into a drama. It tells the story of a woman who has been cursed to change into a dog every night and a guy who is afraid of dogs. She tries to remove the curse.

The webtoon "Deal" (in Korean "거래") by WooNam20 was adapted into a Wavve drama. It tells the story of three high school alumni who meet for the first time in a while and drink a lot. They put one of them to sleep because he was too drunk but they received a phone call saying that he was kidnaped. Will the two of them get him back safely?

The main character Park YeonWoo, who lived in the Joseon Dynasty, suddenly falls to Korea in the 21st century after her husband dies. When she came to her senses, dead husband was in front of her.

The webtoon "Nam Nam" (in Korean "남남") by Jung YoungRong was adapted into a drama. It is a family story about a strange mother and a cool daughter living together and show various happenings that happen during their daily life. It drew attention by recording more than 25 million views.

The romance webtoon "Secret Playlist" (in Korean "플레이, 플리") by 2F was adapted into a drama. It tells the story of Hanju, a university student who is also a cover artist named PLII. She does everything to hide her secret identity when Levi, a popular idol, asks for a collab. However, the two of them grow closer as they are classmates. Will she be able to hide her identity?

26. "Taxi Driver 2" /  Release Date: February 17, 2023

The webtoon "Deluxe Taxi" (in Korean "모범택시") (official English title "Red Cage") by Carlos and KeuKeu JaeJin was adapted into the drama "Taxi Driver" in 2021. SBS released a season 2 of the drama. It tells the story of a special taxi company Rainbow Transportation and their deluxe taxi driver Kim DoGi's complete acts of revenge on behalf of unfair victims.

Lee JeHoon, Esom, and Pyo YeJin are the lead actors of the season 1, but Esom is no longer acting in the season 2.

27. "D.P. 2" /  Release Date: July 28, 2023

The webtoon "D.P Dog Day" (In Korean "D.P 개의 날") by Kim BoTong was adapted into the Netflix Drama "D.P." on Netflix in 2021, and its season 2 was released this year. It is a story about JoonHo and HyoYeol, two members of the D.P. Arrest Team in charge of capturing army deserters, and the stories they learn about the deserters along the way.

Jung HaeIn, Koo KyoHwan, Son SukKu, and more are casted in this season 2.

28. "Sweet Home 2" /  Release Date: December 1, 2023

In 2020, Netflix released the season 1 of "Sweet Home" based on the popular thriller horror webtoon "Sweet Home" (in Korean "스위트홈") by Carnby Kim and YoungChan Hwang. It tells the story of a loner high school student who lost his family and the bizarre and shocking things that happened to him in his new flat.

Song Kang, Lee SiYoung, Go MinSi and Park GyuYoung are cast for the season 2.

29. "The Uncanny Counter 2" / Release Date: July 29, 2023

The fantasy and thriller webtoon "Amazing Rumor" (in Korean "경이로운 소문") by JangYi was adapted into the drama named "The Uncanny Counter" in 2020, and its season 2 aired in 2023. It tells the story of evil spirits of the afterlives who come down to earth to have eternal life and the counters that are capturing them.

Kim SeJeong, Cho ByeongKyu, Yu JunSang, and Yeom HyeRan are the lead actors. The drama was broadcast on tvN, and is now available on Netflix.
