Stray Kids are one of 4th generation K-Pop’s powerhouse groups, known for their intense concepts and roaring performances. Over the years, the fandom, STAY, has been growing exponentially and developing in their passion for the group.

The perfect place to express this passion is the Kpopmap Fan Interview Project where any K-Pop fan is welcome to let us know why they love their favourite group and bias. It’s a chance to talk about anything from their music, their admirable personalities to the significance idols have in their fans’ lives. Covering such aspects, there are many things that have been said about what idols mean to their fans.

This week, we take a look at what STAY from around the world had to say about their favourite group, Stray Kids.

Here are the many reasons why STAY fell in love with Stray Kids.

          1. Their unique music style and concepts

Some STAY have been there with Stray Kids since their debut while others joined the fandom in the last couple of years. Regardless of when they became a fan, it was Stray Kids’ musicality that attracted them. The unique concepts, relatable lyrics and addictive choreography of songs such as ‘Hellevator’ and ‘Thunderous’ are what brought STAY into the fandom.

Canadian STAY Shannon got into Stray Kids in 2017 because she found the concept of ‘Hellevator’ to be so unique. After listening to many groups since getting into K-Pop in 2010, she finally found a group that made music that she loves. Having been there since their early days, she has seen that Stray Kids have “turned many heads with their own malatang flavour of music and dynamic stages.”

Indian STAY Shruti, who joined the fandom during ‘Thunderous’ era, loved “their relatable lyrics, beautiful melodies and addictive choreographies” as well as their “ability to deliver the unexpected and unconventional”.

          2. Their amazing talent as performers and musicians

As a group consisting of incredibly talented members, it is no surprise that their skills as idols are what led STAY to fall in love with Stray Kids.

ChangBin, the main rapper of the group, is one of the members who have won fans, including Shannon, over to become their bias. STAY love him for raspy voice and ability to rap really fast. They also love him for his active contributions to Stray Kids’ music as part of 3RACHA. As part of 3RACHA, he pours raw emotion into his lyrics, “always leaving an imprint” in the hearts and minds of listeners. Shannon recommends ChangBin’s performance of ‘Streetlight’ on “Stray Kids : SKZ-PLAYER” to demonstrate these attributes.

For Mexican STAY Laila, it was HyunJin’s skills as a dancer that captivated her.

“HyunJin's dance impressed me and my first thought was that it was very interesting and attractive. I used to dance in the street with friends and when I saw HyunJin I really loved it and I remembered those days.”

          3. How Stray Kids’ music makes them feel

As strong performers and musicians, Stray Kids’ music always evoke different emotions in their fans. As Serbian STAY Ana explains, their songs such as ‘Case 143’ bring happiness and make STAY dance with their amazing rhythm and interesting lyrics.

On the other hand, they also soothe STAY by providing a sense of warmth. For Ana, ‘Winter Falls’ is one of their songs that make her feel that way.

As a K-Pop group who speak for the youth, their music is also deeply relatable and motivating. Stray Kids have plenty of songs in their discography about the struggles and experiences of young people. Listening to the sincere lyrics make their fans feel understood. ‘Mixtape 3’ is one of these songs that Shruti loves because it is a comforting song providing motivation to students.

          4. What kind of people the Stray Kids members are

However, it’s not just the performances that are the reason for fans to be as dedicated and passionate as they are. It’s also about who they are as people. Whether it’s their hardworking nature or kind personalities, it’s about feeling like they are a friend supporting us or inspiring us to be better.

For many STAY including Laila, it’s Stray Kids’ consistent hard work in everything they do that wins them over. When they see their beloved idols devote their everything into what they do, it makes them want to support them more.

Shruti described Bang Chan, her bias, to be an excellent leader with a heart of gold. It was a video of Bang Chan talking about menstruation that intrigued her about what kind of person he was. “It's not everyday that you see a man talk about something that's a hush-hush topic, much less a K-Pop idol. But he did. Fearlessly.”

          5. The positive impact that they have had on STAY’s lives

Idols have worked so hard to get to where they are and there is much to learn from them. Although fans may be making endeavours in fields outside of the arts, seeing Stray Kids’ authenticity as artists gives them strength to endure hardships, as is the case for Shruti. It has also inspired Laila to keep moving forward while boosting her self esteem.

Needless to say, it has also interested STAY to learn the Korean language. The booming popularity of K-Pop has seen fans of the genre learning Korean and engaging with the culture regardless of their geography with the desire to get closer to their favourite idols and understanding content without subtitles. Fans including Ana and Laila have been inspired to actively learn the language and Shannon has been studying Korean for 3 years (at the time of the interview) with the goal of keeping up with ChangBin’s fast rapping.
