Welcome to the third article of our series, "K-Pop Lyrics Explained" where we analyse the lyrics to some of your favourite songs. Previous, we explained WonHo's 'Blue' and Coldplay's 'My Universe' featuring BTS. Today, we're explaining WEi's 'Starry Night'.
Recently, WEi released the song "Starry Night', produced by dress in collaboration with the platform Universe. The promotional single received great positive response from both fans and non-fans alike for its unique composition, interesting instrumentals, and the overall, striking impression that the song left. The production quality added to the dreamy quality of the song. The vocals, in particular, are overwhelmingly smooth, which makes this song the perfect ear candy.
If you've been wondering what the song actually means, keep reading for our explanation!
'Starry Night' is a promotional single for Universe. It is clear from the song that a lot of effort was taken into writing the lyrics for the song and justifying the grand title, an obvious allusion to Van Gogh's famous painting "The Starry Night". A number of references are made in the song to the painting itself and its various techniques, relating it to reality.
"In a sleeping city, we’re the only ones awake/ Maybe tonight / This skyline is wavy, I’m wandering through / Trying to find the starlight"
The first few lines immediately transport us to the world created by Van Gogh. The wavy brushstrokes, an iconic signature of the painting and the sleeping city below the starlit sky are invoked right from the beginning.
"Where I’m going is not important / Another night is passing / Tomorrow and the day after / We’ll keep drawing it out, oh yeah, us"
There's a fantastical quality to such a night where the lines between the real and reverie are blurred. It seems as though one is sucked into an adventure, much like Alice in Wonderland. Clearly, therefore, the destination is not as important as the journey itself. One can move ahead in life under no predestination but rather by creating or drawing their own destiny. You are the paintbrush that draws your fate.
"A starry night, a grooving heart / My watercolor is spreading on the canvas / I can’t sleep and I’m drawing out the night / On this starry starry starry night"
This is as direct a reference to the painting as it can get. The painting was a "night study" brought to life on paper and WEi expresses a similar sentiment.
"I’m avoiding the eyes on me / The secret moves behind the shadows / Magic on my fingertips /I’m facing the far away, hidden moonlight / Oh I’m tryna paint it / Making it touch the sky / I want to show you babe"
Disregarding criticism, hate, malice, and doubt, WEi moves forward, creating magic with their music. Creating such art would be impossible if they were to give in to negativity from the outside world. Instead, the only person they're focusing on, the only one they want to show their world to, is RUi.
"I wandered and wandered and finally found it, my whole life / Now I know, without you, I’m so blind / Ay I’ll be your starlight / I’ll brightly shine on your night / Adding colors to my night, let’s draw it out tonight"
Finally, the song closes out with an affirmation that when WEi and RUi are together, both will flourish and shine like diamonds in the sky.
