The Voyage Of Versatility: Kim WooSeok's Evolution & Personal Duality

Face genius, music genius, acting genius Kim WooSeok has been a dazzling force to be reckoned with in the Korean entertainment industry for quite a while now. Across generations of K-Pop, Kim WooSeok has consistently dominated the scene and shown us different facets of his extraordinary talents, and yet he continues to amaze us every time. Without a doubt, this is only possible because Kim WooSeok pours his heart and soul, blood, sweat, and tears into his art, and it shows. It was only through intense hard work, sincerity, and unstilted passion beaming like a light that never goes out that Kim WooSeok became such an unrivaled star.

To recap, Kim WooSeok dropped out of school because he had a dream - of becoming a barista. In the process, he took up a part-time job at the filming site of “Superstar K” handing out flyers. As fate would have it, he was scouted by JYP Entertainment and later TOP Media. Even though he didn’t have any clear interest in the entertainment industry at the time, primarily due to the fact that he never thought of himself as a potential celebrity because he came from the countryside, Kim WooSeok’s mother was keen on the opportunity. Seeing his potential, she was brought to tears when he initially rejected the offer and asked him to give it a try for a month or two and come back if it was not to his liking.

Thus, Kim WooSeok went from someone who struggled to learn singing and dancing, considering himself unsuited to what he thought was the “luxury” of trainee life in Seoul, to getting the chance to perform as a dancer for Teen Top and eventually finding himself more and more in love with the art. It was only when he heard the cheers of excitement coming from fans that he acknowledged his dream of becoming a singer, and to this day, Kim WooSeok cites his fans as his driving force.

After years of training filled with toil, Kim WooSeok debuted as a member of UP10TION. However, as fans will know, it wasn’t until his debut with X1 following a successful stint on “Produce X 101” that he received his first-ever paycheck. Before anything else, he paid off his parents’ debt with his own money and ordered himself expensive seafood to celebrate.

Later, in 2020, Kim WooSeok debuted as a solo artist, and the rest, of course, is history that is still in the making. Besides hard-earned success, Kim WooSeok was also showered with love and attention from fans worldwide. In addition to commercial renown, WooSeok’s music, which he wrote and composed himself, was also critically acclaimed, which quickly established him as a revered soloist - one of the best in the industry!

Today, as Kim WooSeok keeps rising to peaks of success, he continues to be ambitious yet grounded, always in tune with his roots even when he is on top of the world, and that is one of the defining characteristics of his personal duality.

Speaking of personal duality, perhaps the first type that we notice is between his on and off-stage/screen personas. Kim WooSeok is admittedly a shy and reserved person, but he transforms on stage and in front of the camera into the most magnetic performer who was born to bring joy into the world with his art.

A comparison Kim WooSeok made in this regard is that when he looks in the mirror, he sees himself for who he is, but when we see him on the screen, it is what Kim WooSeok wants to show us. Neither version is any less or more real than the next, but they represent the duality between art and artist.

If it’s not evident enough from his analogy, Kim WooSeok is a deeply introspective and intellectual person. NIA (Kim WooSeok’s fandom) have seen him be his adorable, clumsy, playful self, but when you shift your attention to his artistic philosophy, his unique worldview, wisdom, and cerebral insights reveal themselves. He's bold in his endeavors, unafraid of challenges, rational but imaginative, and extremely well-read, which adds to his artistic faculties. The duality between the childlike innocence of our Daejeon Kitty and the maturity of Kim WooSeok will never seize to astonish us.

Kim WooSeok might be calm and composed by nature, but his unpredictable chaotic side just hits different. Even his sense of humor has duality! He is effortlessly witty and even sarcastic at times, but he also delivers classic dad jokes like nobody’s business. He might appear nonchalant and unperturbed at times, but his sudden bursts of expressiveness make him even more endearing. Be it aegyo or sass, a boost of self-love, a bombastic side eye, or a casual prank, Kim WooSeok is a master of it all, and we love to see it.

Another aspect of Kim WooSeok’s personality that makes him all the more admirable is how much love he has in his heart. Be it his group members, staff members, fellow contestants on "Produce X 101" and fans or co-actors, directors, seniors, juniors, and quite literally anyone he crosses paths with, Kim WooSeok is always gentle, kind, attentive and polite, which has earned him praise everywhere he goes. His subtle tsundere charm is irresistible, and he probably knows it too! Similarly, when it comes to his pets, he is always learning how to care for them well and showers them with affection.

In conclusion, Kim WooSeok is someone who is constantly evolving, improving himself, and cultivating his talents in new and innovative directions. He is someone we can look up to and learn from, but he’s also one of us, someone NIA can identify with and relate to, and this duality is reflected in his music, which teaches us to aspire for greatness but also find joy in the little things. Can this man get any more perfect?

Courage In Creativity: Kim WooSeok's Vocal Duality

Saying Kim WooSeok is an all-rounder would be an understatement because his talents know no bounds. His latest release - the 4th mini-album “Blank Page” is co-written and co-composed by the idol himself - a trend that he has maintained and a challenge that he has undertaken with every single solo release yet.

Another common factor in all of Kim WooSeok’s solo albums is that they’re each an excellent portrayal of Kim WooSeok’s versatility. From the diversity of genres to the moods, feelings, and emotions displayed through the lyrics, the variety of composition, and, of course, his outstanding vocals - Kim WooSeok is synonymous with limitlessness. Needless to say, this only proves that Kim WooSeok’s innate genius combined with his unrelenting effort is a surefire formula for creating masterpieces.

One of the most unique qualities of Kim WooSeok as a vocalist is his ability to employ his range to create infinite permutations and combinations of sonic aesthetics. Let us discover some songs from his incredible discography that best represent this duality.

What better place to start than with Kim WooSeok’s latest mini-album “Blank Page”? The title song ‘Dawn’ boasts a robust yet hauntingly addictive melody that demands attention with its breathless urgency. As opposed to the intensity of the instrumentals, Kim WooSeok’s voice is tender and breathy with a sense of enigmatic mystery. It builds up to a scintillating crescendo, leaving us with goosebumps. The chorus is full-throated and power-driven, which in turn, also aids the storytelling of the song.

‘Dawn’ is immediately followed by the wonderfully soft ‘Love and Hate’, characterized by a delicate balance of vulnerability and strength. Kim WooSeok’s voice is deep and rich, giving the song an intimate mood, almost as if he is serenading you and you alone. This is in heavy contrast to the cinematic grandeur of ‘Dawn’.

The binary between ‘Dawn’ and ‘Love and Hate’ is repeated once again through the energetic pop EDM track ‘Heaven, Are You There’, which is succeeded by the tenderness of ‘Slip’ and, finally, the sentimental ballad ‘If I Miss You’.

Next, let’s go back to Kim WooSeok’s third mini album, “3RD DESIRE [Reve]”, for another example of vocal duality.

In ‘Switch’, Kim WooSeok plays with his higher register, giving the song a bright, innocent, and dreamy vibe. However, despite being sweet like candy, there’s a certain grit to the song, which brings out Kim WooSeok’s penchant for alt-rock.

On the other hand, ‘Shame’ is a, mesmerizing R&B track with the spotlight on Kim WooSeok’s hypnotizing vocals. The huskiness in his voice is enough for us to melt into puddles, and every word that leaves his lips is imbued with honest emotion.

Finally, we could not possibly conclude without the two songs that perhaps best exemplify the gist of Kim WooSeok’s vocal duality - ‘Sugar’ from “2ND DESIRE [TASTY]” and ‘Red Moon’ from “1ST DESIRE [GREED]”.

If playful pink cotton candy were a song, it would be ‘Sugar’, and if decadent chocolate-covered cherries were one, ‘Red Moon’ would be it. Interestingly, both songs are on a higher pitch, but it is Kim WooSeok’s distinct tone for each that sets them apart. In ‘Sugar’, it is light, airy, and clear, whereas in ‘Red Moon’, it is dark, dynamic, and raw, with the falsettos and high notes living in our heads rent-free. Duality must be Kim WooSeok’s middle name because it just does not get better than this!

For more of Kim WooSeok's vocal prowess, we recommend you check out Kim WooSeok and YOUNITE Lee EunSang's 'Memories', Kim WooSeok's performance of 'I Will Give You Everything' (originally by Cho KyuMan) on "The King of Mask Singer" and while you're at it, just put his entire discography on shuffle.

Mastering The Art Of Transformation: Kim WooSeok's Stage & Screen Duality

Beyond showcasing his remarkable vocal duality, Kim WooSeok's stage performances reveal yet another dimension to his artistry. Shining with the light of a thousand suns, Kim WooSeok enthralls his audience with his refined presence, magnetic command, flawless dance, and unbeatable facial expressions.

As is obvious from our discussion of Kim WooSeok’s discography, there’s almost no concept that Kim WooSeok hasn’t attempted and mastered yet. From sugary sweet to luxuriously dark and everything in between - Kim WooSeok’s versatility is out of this world.

Perhaps the first thing you will notice in a Kim WooSeok stage is how he faces the audience, whether it be live or through the camera. There’s a certain confidence and honesty in the way Kim WooSeok addresses his art to you that inevitably draws you in.

No matter how intricate and demanding or light and lyrical the choreography, Kim WooSeok can make it appear effortless. His elegance and grace are buoyant, like a feather gliding in the air, and we’re left in awe of his captivating aura.

At the same time, when the stage calls for impact, he pumps his performance with power, force, and intensity. The raw energy in his movements, the conviction in his expressions, casts a spell on us that we never want to break.

Kim WooSeok’s performance of ‘Red Moon’ is the perfect example of this duality that posits poise and finesse alongside bold passion and ardent fervor. The choreography, which combines subtle, delicate movements and grand, fast-paced sequences, is fine-tuned to highlight Kim WooSeok’s duality, but the idol surpasses expectations and creates a league of his own.

That was Kim WooSeok’s solo debut track, but a similar signature duality is also seen in his latest title track ‘Dawn’. Once again, we have a bewitching juxtaposition of ravishing smoothness and fiery zeal. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that this tantalizing blend has become Kim WooSeok’s brand.

Another medium of performance for Kim WooSeok is acting, and the method to his genius is simply not having a method. He’s always looking to break out of his shell, or his “image” as he calls it, and venturing into new artistic avenues by taking on unique roles. It is no surprise, therefore, that even in such a short time, Kim WooSeok has a commendably versatile filmography.

Kim WooSeok made his acting debut in 2020 with the web drama “Twenty Twenty”, where he played the main role of Lee HyunJin. Lee HyunJin dreams of becoming a music producer and putting his own music out there but he has a conflicted inner world as he struggles to come to terms with issues of trust and abandonment that arose from his family problems.

Kim WooSeok does a great job of portraying the devotion and longing of Lee HyunJin, both in music and romance, and his character development feels even more realistic, thanks to WooSeok’s natural acting. However, this was just the tip of the iceberg that is his range.

We got a glimpse of this range soon enough because, in 2021, Kim WooSeok appeared in the blockbuster fantasy drama “Bulgasal: Immortal Souls” alongside a star-studded cast of actors. Kim WooSeok played Nam DoYoon in the drama, and it was with this role that the actor was dubbed a scene-stealer. Described by Kim WooSeok as a “blank slate”, Nam DoYoon is a passionate, complex, hurt, and morally ambiguous character that the audience unwittingly grows attached to.

Despite the storm brewing inside him, he appears peppy and spirited. His animated idiosyncrasies bring life to the show, and you just can’t help but adore him. Portraying such emotional extremes is no easy task, but Kim WooSeok makes it look effortless as if he’s been doing this for ages. He even revealed in an interview with “Allure” that the director of “Bulgasal: Immortal Souls” particularly liked his eyes because they’re capable of conveying a multitude of emotions.

Then, in 2022, Kim WooSeok appeared in a guest role in “Mimicus”, and this year, in 2023, he is taking on another lead role - that of Baek WooHyun in “Finland Papa”. As always, Kim WooSeok has picked yet another impressive project, which is currently receiving high praise from viewers all over the world.

Baek WooHyun, in particular, is raising anticipation for more reasons than one. Firstly, he is like sunshine in the rain for our heroine YuRi (Kim BoRa), and they go way back, but in the present timeline, Baek WooHyun is a mystery, seen only in flashbacks colored with nostalgia and yearning for a simpler time. Easily, Kim WooSeok manages to make a place for Baek WooHyun in our hearts with his luminous yet nuanced and understated, subtle acting.

From the youthful passion of Lee HyunJin to the agonized search for warmth that Nam DoYoon undertakes and now, the healing touch of love from afar that Baek WooHyun represents, Kim WooSeok keeps delivering the best of the best, and his style matures with every experience. Now, that’s what we call a versatile actor.
