MBC / Woollim Entertainment / SBS

If you are an avid K-Drama watcher with over 100 dramas under your belt, you most likely search for dramas with fresh topics to add to your watchlist. While searching for them, you might have a close look at the lead characters. Because if one of the lead characters has a job never seen before then that is one of the best methods to avoid a "deja-vu" feeling.

Even if the occupation of the lead character(s) might not be all in bringing a wind of freshness to the storyline, it can help a lot. Commonly seen jobs are students, office workers (sales), CEO, doctors, police officers/detective, teachers, lawyers, idols,  etc. We love them for sure. However, there were dramas that touched on occupations we'd barely seen before and we want to see more of them!

Look at 16 jobs and beings we would like to see a K-Drama's lead character take/be once more. These might bring the wind of change we are looking for.

Note: This article does not take Korean movies, dramas of less than 6 episodes, web dramas, and dramas released before 2008 into account. This article includes light spoilers.

        1. Mermaid

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        SBS

Mermaids are one of the beings we absolutely want to see the most on our screens again. Unfortunately, the fantastical Western creature was seen in too few K-Dramas compared to the huge potential it has. In "Legend of the Blue Sea" (Lee MinHo and Jun JiHyun) and "The Idle Mermaid" (Cho BoAh, On JooWan, Song JaeRim, Park JiSoo, Nam JooHyuk, and more), Jun JiHyun and Cho BoAh took the role of gorgeous mermaids ending up on earth.

Filming a drama about one mermaid or several mermaids might require a high budget because the mermaid costumes and filming long hours underwater can be pricy. Moreover, not every actor would agree with spending days in freezing waters for a drama. It requires being comfortable with water and swimming and also being in a good physical state because filming a drama requires a lot of hours on the set.

A drama with mermaids will be for sure magical. If there is a good plot and budget, it would be one of the most liked fantasy dramas.

        2. "Korean Joseon Robin Hood" Iljimae

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        SBS

A dark and mysterious sword man saving people from injustices while seeking revenge and hiding his double identity is all that we are looking for. He is a people's hero, does spectacular acrobatics, hides his face behind a beautiful mask, and has difficulty hiding his secret identity from his lover.

This is exactly the role of Lee JoonGi in "Iljimae" (2008). He was Iljimae, the masked thief who helps people at night. It could be compared to a "Korean Robin Hood" in some ways to help you understand quickly if you are not familiar with Iljimae. It has been more than 10 years and no new drama on a similar topic has been made. It is a shame, for sure.

Some dramas we could also think of are: "City Hunter" in the modern world and "Bridal Mask" during the Japanese colonization of Korea. Lee MinHo in "City Hunter" looked more at his own revenge than helping people, but in "Bridal Mask" Joo Won did have this hero title. In these two dramas, there was tension about getting their identity discovered as well.

        3. Movie translator

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        JTBC

The work of translators and interpreters is amazing. We all watched shows with subtitles but we don't really know how this is done. Through the character of Oh MiJoo acted by Shin SaeKyeong in "Run On", we learned a lot about translations and how it works to add text at the right time on the video. This movie translator and interpreter showed us a part of her work, but we are looking to know more about it.

More than movies, it would be great to have a male or female lead translating K-Dramas into English, explaining what they are struggling with and the fun part of their job. It would be insightful and entertaining.

        4. Ballet dancer

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        tvN

In K-Dramas, there are a lot of sports covered, especially badminton in 2021-2022 with "Love All Play" and "Racket Boys". On the other hand, sports like ballets are less covered and even if they are some, it was mostly girls doing ballets like in "Weightlifting Fairy Kim BokJoo" and "Angel's Last Mission: Love". In "Weightlifting Fairy Kim BokJoo", it was only secondary as swimming and weightlifting were the main focus.

In "Angel's Last Mission: Love", Shin HaeSun was an arrogant ballerina. We've seen her dance a lot of times. It was elegant and fascinating. Later the drama "Navillera" was released and showed another side of the sport. The drama mainly focused on ballet and the (male) ballet dancers Park InHwan and Song Kang.

K-Drama viewers who love to see delicate performances are waiting for the next drama on ballet dancers.

        5. Angel

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        KBS

All the viewers of "Angel's Last Mission: Love" will most likely agree with the idea of having an angel or angels again in K-Drama. If you did not watch, we are not talking about A.N.JELL from "You're Beautiful" but real angels.

Kim MyungSoo (INFINITE's L) was the angel Kim Dan who had the mission to find love for Lee YeonSeo (Shin HaeSun) before returning to heaven. He saved her several times with his shining white wings and mentally supported her to help her change and overcome obstacles. With the utmost care, he looked after her and protected her. Dan made us fall in love with him for a lot of reasons.

We are sure that a male or female angel could have a new mission for a non-tear-jerking drama. We need to see these angels' wings again, if not at least an angel's face.

        6. A young woman striving to be a local politician

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        KBS

One of the occupations the most wanted by Koreans is public servant due to its security and benefits. Moreover, political dramas are appreciated by Koreans and overseas viewers. One drama that stood out for us is the drama "Memorials" starring NaNa and Park SungHoon.

Talking about local elections from "lower" ranked politicians as the two characters are working for the district assembly. More than the election process -which was passionating- it was more the different types of work they are doing locally and the political struggles of a young lady without a political back and social network.

A drama on the same topic could bring more highlights on the work of the people we vote for (if you live in a country where you can vote for your local representatives) and the importance of participating in elections, even if district politicians seem less important than others at first sight. Looking at the work of these people who solve the issues of our every day would be a good watch.

        7. Mountain Ranger

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        tvN

Did you know that Korea is covered 70% by mountains? So there is no wonder why one of Koreans' favorite hobbies is going hiking. Alone, with friends, lovers, or family, they don't miss visiting their beautiful mountains through all four seasons. Their landscapes and colors are eternal paintings that overseas fans love to this.

"Jirisan" with Jun JiHyun and Ju JiHoon was the perfect window into the lives of park rangers and their colleagues working in these mountains. Braving snow storms and brazing fires, or "simply" warning visitors about the dangers of the mountains and regulations. The drama embraced a lot of faces of the ranger work from high-risk situations to their daily work.

A drama on the same topic would be the perfect means to explore other mountains of Korea and not only Jirisan. For example, Hallasan which is an even taller mountain than Jirisan, or Seoraksan which is one of the most beloved mountains by Koreans would be the perfect spot. With a production like "Jirisan" and a high budget, we can hope to visit the forest with its best colors and drone filming.

        8. Racecar Driver

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        MBC

Speed, expensive cars, and hot guys/ladies racing... do that ring a bell to you? Most likely not in a K-Drama! Expensive cars and hot leads are common but we do not see professional racecar drivers often!

Seo Jin (acted by Ha SeokJin) in "When I Was the Most Beautiful" took this role. But we barely saw him racing in the first half of the drama, and it was the reason for his medical conditions in the second half of the drama. It is not in the K-Drama world but in the K-Pop world that we saw another handsome (but jerk) racecar driver. It was Song JaeRim in 2NE1's 'Go Away' MV (among others).

With a car racer, we can hope the drama raises our heartbeats with competition and crazy car racing. A woman car racer could also be a hit!

        9. Pastry chef

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        KBS

At first, you might think we have seen a lot of pastry chefs in K-Drama but if you give it another thought, you will notice that they are all cooks. We are talking about the ones that do tasty and splendid desserts or pastries that make us droll while watching them bake.

In "Bread, Love and Dreams" Yoon ShiYoon and Joo Won showed their love and passion for baking, making bread, or Korean-style desserts. The 30 episodes K-Drama stole many viewers' hearts in 2010 and we need a more recent story.

For a new drama, what about choosing a Korean-style pastry and a more Western-style bakery? Putting the two arts under the spotlights? So that this drama makes all the viewers rush to their nearest shop to buy sweet pieces of bread, croissants, etc.

        10. Cybercrime investigator specialized in illegal hidden cameras or spycams (molka)

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        SBS

Molka or spycams is more than a serious issue in Korea causing too many victims every day. Some dramas have touched on these issues, such as "Taxi Driver". However, it was too brief.

While there is the drama "Juvenile Justice" on minor criminality in Korea, a drama solely on molka could arouse the public and officials' interest in the topics.

In 2019, prosecutors dropped 43.5 percent of sexual digital crimes cases, compared with 27.7 percent of homicide cases and 19 percent of robbery cases. Judges often impose low sentences – in 2020, 79 percent of those convicted of capturing intimate images without consent received a suspended sentence, a fine, or a combination of the two. Fifty-two percent received only a suspended sentence. The problems survivors face in the justice system are exacerbated by a lack of women police, prosecutors, and judges.
        Human Righs Watch

A K-Drama on this would be heavy and difficult to watch but put necessary light on this lacking system. It would be interesting to have a team of cybercrime investigators fighting against justice for the victims of molka from stairs spycams, restrooms spycams, to intimate moments with their partner illegally filmed; a fight including the punishment of the criminals filming or watching these illegal contents.

        11. Woman elite against Joseon system

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        MBC

Fusion historical dramas have always been trending. Contemporary stories in an old background can only be popular. Women's struggles in modern society might be different from Joseon's ladies, but there will be common points that will catch the attention of the viewers.

Dramas such as "Rookie Historian Goo HaeRyung" touched on that topic. Shin SaeKyeong acted as an intelligent and curious lady who is a troublemaker in Joseon. The way she thinks is too different from the societal norms back in Joseon in a male-centered society. Her character received a lot of love from watchers.

A K-Drama like the Netflix movie "I Am Not An Easy Man" set in Joseon could be a hit. "I Am Not An Easy Man" story is taking place in an alternate universe where gender roles are reversed, highlighting the daily sexism women are facing. It would be very new to have a fusion drama on a similar idea.

        12. AI Game developer

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        tvN

Video Games are popular but barely seen in K-Dramas when Chinese dramas offer a lot of choices. Koreans are good a gaming and are interested in new technology so a new drama about AI game developers like in "Memories of the Alhambra" could be a good idea.

This new drama could take a non-fantasy side of the AI Game to be different from "Memories of the Alhambra". Giving the spotlight to the engineers and the marketing team or a bit like in "Strong Girl BongSoon" or "Lucky Romance" with CEO of gaming companies.

        13. Alien

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        SBS

Aliens can be scary beings... but at the same time handsome and smart. Yes, we are talking about Do MinJoon (Kim SooHyun) in "My Love from the Star". We are sure some of you would love to see an impossible yet sweet love story between an alien and a human once again.

The dramas "Circle" and "Glitch" also touch on this topic. Dramas on space researchers (not astronauts, those working in the lab to discover the mystery of space) could be the perfect background to have a destiny meeting between a scientist and an alien.

        14. An employee of an international airport

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        SBS

When hearing "airport" you might think about pilots or flight intendants first. These are not the jobs we are talking about here. It is about the employees of an international airport dealing with duty-free shop management, travelers' safety, landing planes, drug controls, immigration, etc. An international airport is full of people from all over the world day and night, and its employees have a lot to deal with, even tasks we would not imagine as travelers.

In "Where Stars Land", Chae SooBin, Lee JeHoon, SF9's RoWoon, Lee DongGun, Kim JiSoo, Kim KyungNam, and more portrayed the employees of Incheon airport divided with the passenger service team, operation planning team, landing team, security service team, etc.

Airport employees working before or in times of COVID-19 (struggling to keep their job, sanitary checks regulations) might be a good background to film a drama.

        15. Cheerleader

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        SBS

Cheerleading is an essential part of Korean culture. It can be seen at universities but also in other sports games. The drama "Cheer Up" introduced the Korean university cheerleading culture to international K-Drama viewers. You would know that Yonhee University and its cheerleaders Theia have similarities with Yonsei University and its cheerleaders Akaraka. The background of this drama not only allowed viewers to be in awe of beautiful stages and teamwork but also to let the world know about Korean university cheerleading.

Baseball and cheerleading make one in Korea. Koreans are also passionate about baseball, and we had a glimpse of it in "Hot Stove League" talking about an unsuccessful baseball team and its new manager. We think that having a drama about baseball cheerleaders would be informative and exciting to watch.

        16. Weather forecaster

16 K-Drama Jobs & Beings We Need Again On Screen

        JTBC

We are sure we were not the only ones that found passionating the work of weather forecasters in "Forecasting Love and Weather". Park MinYoung, Song Kang, and more worked for the National Weather Service forecasting the weather in Korea. It is different from the work of weather broadcasters like Kong HyoJin in "Jealousy Incarnate".

The 16 episodes most likely did not cover all sides of the jobs of the National Weather Service. If the plot is solid and different from "Forecasting Love and Weather", a new drama would be a good idea.
