“So I Married the Anti-fan” is the feel-good webtoon-esque romance that it promised us it would be. The drama stars Choi TaeJoon, Girls’ Generation’s (Choi) SooYoung, 2PM’s ChanSung and Han JiAn -  and straight off-the-bat the character dynamic promises for an entertaining 16 episodes.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for episodes 1 and 2 of "So I Married the Anti-fan!"

On first impression, the show already has us laughing at the cat-and-dog relationship between the leads, WhoJoon played by Choi TaeJoon and Lee GeunYoung played by SooYoung.

WhoJoon presents himself as the heartthrob K-Pop star and has an adoring international fanbase to prove it. He is at the peak of his career and under pressure to keep it that way. However, there is an undertone to his real personality. He seems almost misunderstood and cold.

This shows through the interactions between him and 2PM ChangSung’s character JJ (an entertainment mogul). JJ has some resentment towards WhoJoon for being successful in his music career and uses every excuse to get under his skin. He is also potentially romantically involved with Oh InHyung played by HanJiAn, which irks WhoJoon even more because she is his first love.

Navigating these relationships while trying to keep up his career, shows us a lot of things about his character. He seems somewhat unhappy - which could be from maintaining the facade of a certain on-stage character, or from dealing with the technicalities of regular social relationships behind the scenes. Although we haven’t come far into the drama, it should be interesting to see how WhoJoon can grow into the duality of who he is and who he is expected to be.

Our other main character is Lee GeunYoung. She is from a different side of the entertainment world and unappreciated in her role as a journalist. It is clear that she has big goals, but also that her position is at the bottom of the ladder that she needs to climb. Her first impression is a little naive and she seems like a pushover. These two character traits combined land her in trouble in both her personal and professional life. She’s out of luck with love, recently haven broken up with her boyfriend and her work life is no better.

But how do these characters cross paths? GeunYoung gets assigned an event to attend and is told to get coverage of the guests in attendance, especially WhoJoon. On their first encounter he catches her before she falls, and although there is a slight misunderstanding (he mistakes her for a crazed fan) it’s cleared up and she walks away with a kind impression of him.

This doesn’t last long when by the end of the night she catches him in an incriminating conversation with Oh InHyung and WhoJoon snaps at the invasion of privacy. The two get into a heated confrontation which ends with GeunYoung’s camera being broken and her throwing a high-heel at his head. Unfortunately, the latter is caught on camera. This sparks the very public and tangible dislike between the two of them.

As a result, WhoJoon complains to her company and gets her fired. She is determined to get justice and expose the other side of his personality. From then on, every single one of their encounters leaves the other person angry and the media eats it up. This leaves WhoJoon in a bind as his reputation is at stake, so he announces that he is willing to embrace even an anti-fan such as Lee GeunYoung.

This sparks an idea from his company Shooting Star Entertainment - they will  produce a reality show called “So I Married the Anti-fan” and the two will be challenged to live together and reconcile their differences. The concept is quite similar to the old Korean variety show “We Got Married” - but is it possible? Can two people who have so much dislike for each other live in the same house peacefully, and on camera at that?

How do you think this K-Drama will play out?
